The Toyota R and its amazing 43-year run make it tough for other Toyota engines to grab the spotlight, even in the case of an engine family that was born in 1978 and is still being manufactured today. The Toyota A certainly deserves some attention, having been dropped into everything from snoreworthy econoboxes to screamin' factory hot rods. Corollas, Camrys, MR2s, Tercels, Celicas; if Toyota (or, in some cases, GM) made it, chances are it could be had with some flavor of A engine. The A has been made with 2, 4, or 5 valves per cylinder, one or two cams, natural aspiration or supercharging. [Wikipedia]

photoshop! why is there photoshop in my engine of the day?
Oh, fond memories of my 4A-GE in my '86 MR2. A rev-happy little motor that seem to almost taunt you, daring you to mash the pedal and wind it up.
Redline? What redline?
Any engine that is delivered with ITBs is good in my book.
Sweet, another EOTD that I've owned. 4A-GE's are a lot of fun, and they returned good mileage back when gas was cheap enough not to care about such things. Fill up the MR2, throw in a pack of smokes, and still get change back from my $10. Good times.
Ah an engine I own. Well actually I've got two. One for parts and second really nice one (500 miles on a rebuilt, dual weber carbs, etc) installed in my Lotus Seven clone.

Great motor. The 20 valve versions are even better - drove an MR2 with one - the sound is glorious.
Good stuff! the 4AG was good enough for my personal track car, our 24 hours of lemons car, and even the formula atlantic series for many years. Jalopnik, you're making thousands of Filipinos and Puertoricans proud today (funny though, I am neither).
@daegon: yeah, why are there odd squares of white sheet background there? What are you trying to hide, Mr. Martin? You didn't filch the photo, did you?
@FreeMan: Sure I filched the photo, but it came with the weird Photoshop crap already done. Nice engine, though, which is why I used the photo.
My 80 tercel had the 3A in it and a whopping 62 hp. Still went 80 though...
@Murilee Martin: Oh, well, as long as you stole it, that's fine.
As you were.
I was wondering when this series of toyota engines would get the recognition it deserves!
The last sports variant, a 20 valve 1.6L dohc 4 banger came with individual throttle bodies from the factory. Induction sounds are WONDERFUL when the plenum is ditched and open stacks are utilized. I'm using it in my corolla!
One gentleman from Japan spent $100,000+ transforming his Corolla Levin (ae86) into the "ultimate" street driven corolla and used a similar engine. I say similar cause most of it was built using one off competition parts

I've had Toyota R, A, and RZ motors, and they all do what you'd expect. Nothing more, nothing less. Good for wives, not mistresses.
Nailhead motor? Nah! Flathead? Nope! This engine will be synonymous with cool, vintage engines in 20 years just like the motors above. Great look and in a fun motor.
@theeastbaykid: Some of us aren't into the hassle (and risk to life and limb) of actually having a mistress. Sticking with a lovely wife and reading about mistresses has its charm.
Close but no cigar. The 82 Starlet I had used the 4K-C. Funny that when I describe that car to anyone I have to call it a Tercel hatchback eventhough it really was nothing like it.
Guess I'll have to live with only ever owning the 4.0 straight 6 since I don't think GM's 2.8l V6, Chrysler's 3.8l V6 or the new gen of GM small blocks will ever make this list.
Getting close to 200 thousand miles on the one in my 88 MR2. It uses oil - about a quart every other tank or so. And the gas mileage is about 30 - 35 MPG. I have a supercharged one from an AE101 in the garage that will get a checkout and transplant this summer.
@Dave7:
Best of luck on the Lotus. How many horsepower does the engine produce?
That's Takumi motor right?
25 year old 62hp 3ac got me to 100mph in the aerodynamically bricklike Tercel 4wd
down a big hill
with a tailwind
3am
I think i've done about 300,000 mostly slow km's in secondhand 3ac's in with only routine maintenance. A weber 32/36 carby will add a few more horsies to the party soon.
Whats the highest redline outta one of these? 14k?
As a side thought, how about finding some videos accompanying the EOTD? I luvs me some live engine pr0n. Anyone else see a Renault v12 on an engine dyno? Or the v8 cosworth...idling at 9k. Those twin six vids were oddly (and aurally(?)erotic as well.
The 4AGE is basically a Cosworth BDA built to higher standards.
I'll never forget my NA '89 MR2 - still one of the best sports cars I've ever driven, and I count 911s and Loti among them.
@andy_wallwhore: Hmmm... that's a good idea.
+ Watch video
@Murilee Martin: Hey thanks. I just remembered an old post of a staged-turbo cummings diesil sled puller spooling up...locomotive, indeed. Nothing like video/audio. A.
I have great fondness for the little A-block... had an '84 Corolla Sport SR5, which for those not in the know is an AE86 Corolla with a carbureted single cam. Incredibly fun car, and one I miss ever since I sold it. That thing would do everything but go fast, and get 30mpg doing it. Factory 3.90s in the rear didn't hurt, either.
I'd argue that the best Toyota engine ever was the 1JZ, but whatever.
@Heartwork: We'll have more Toyota engines in this series. No shortage of good Toyota engines!
I have two and a half of these--one mightily abused 7AFE in the Corolla and one performance-rebuilt 7AGE (16V worked head, 264 cams, GSX-R 750 ITBs with adapter plate) in the MIL's garage. The 4AFE that powered a sedan of my boyhood survived years of abusive neglect at the hands of old folk, only needed one motor mount to keep it attached to the frame (experimentally tested for over a year) and still returned excellent mileage. Hurray for the A engines! They may not be pu**y magnets like the JZ, M, or R series, and they sure as heck get outflowed by the B-series Honda engines, but if it went on one A engine, it'll go on another, and they really do last forever, minus pesky valve seal/piston ring issues.
The 4AFE in my '79 Corolla All-Trac Farm-Truc is still running strong despite seeing mostly firewood hauling and rally driving duty. The full exhaust delete modification hasn't hurt it any. I'm sure the 2.0 ABA in my VW is never going to make this list unless you have a "gas tractor engine that sounds like a drawer full of silverware at high rpm" catagory
who wanted engine p0rn?

My 4AFE has 228,000 miles on the clock. A little anemic in the lower RPMs, it does love to rev at the high end.
swapped a 20v 4AGE silvertop into my '87 MR2...the sounds from that motor are glorious :)
And I see your engine p0rn, and raise you this:
