Underground Garbage truck street racing is apparently the latest threat to civil society in Canada, because cops in Goderich, Ontario have busted a driver for 112 KPH in a 60 KPH zone. The part that has us furrowing our brow is there seems to be no opponent in this race. Which would simply make it speeding, which would mean the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP, yeah you know them) wouldn't be able to impound the truck, suspend his license and levy a minimum $2,000 fine.
Apparently what's going on here is the exercise of a new law on the Canadian books to combat street racing where the speeds exceed 50 KPH above posted limits. Remember the old man in the Olds arrested for racing? Same law. We fail to see how this is racing if there is, you know... no race involved in the situation. Leave it to the OPP to find a way to snag other peoples money. [Canada.com]

Sir, Step OOT of the truck, eh........drop the Kraft dinner and place your hands on the door, you knob!
to be fare to the cops here, 2000 sounds pretty much in order for going that fast in a FUCKING GARBAGE TRUCK PEOPLE.. those things don't exactly stop on a dime in case something gets in its way.
Hey Jalop...do you guys need a graphic designer??? I'm loving that picture. I know where you can hire one... I need a new job.
Ahh, I'm so glad this made it to Jalopnik. Some friends and I (who are all very opposed to this ridiculous new law) were reading this yesterday and got a good laugh.
@Chinese Knockoff Bento:
Wow.. that impression was.. bang on.
Inkedfusion = Canadian
My buddy bought a new charger and opened it up on the highway on his way home from the dealership. Got caught doing 155km/h in a 100 zone. So with this new Street Racing/Stuntdriving law.. His car was impounded, up to $5000 fine, licence suspended for a week, looses points on his licence, insurance goes up, has to make a court appearance and pay the impounding fees.
Also under the new law, running a red light is considered "stunting" and carries the same fine.
Having too many occupants in a vehicle is "stunting" and carries the same fine.
I don't know who writes this stuff, but they clearly are in need of a dictionary as they aren't able to accurately define the terms "racing" and "stunt driving".
Okay, I see a hydraulic compactor, lift-forks, tim horton's refillable mug.... not a bad way to drop twenty grand!
@TampaRon: Yeah, i was just looking at that. Are you guys out of stock photos or something?
I can mock up some images like lightning if you need.
@Chinese Knockoff Bento: ...you hoser.
112 KPH...so that's like what, 23 miles per hour?
112 in a garbage truck in a populated area is fucking stupid unless the garbage in the back had caught fire and he was trying to drive away from it.
@inkedfusion: He could face UP TO a $10,000 fine.
Most people are getting the $2000 (unless you're an old man, then you get off with a minor speeding ticket)
The latest tally shows that over 5000 charges of "street racing" have been laid since the new law came in September '07. Thats $10,000,000 in revenue. Who are the criminals?
@stuntpuppy: No, with current conversion rates the garbage truck was approaching 763mph. Pretty quick for a mostly stock garbage truck I think, but I guess if you count that it had bagged shocks, that may have helped
The garbage guy's trying to get his drift on, eh? He's not the only one.

@drunkcanuck: I can do L.A. cops to:
*Bang* *Bang* *Bang* Get up from the ground, perp! I swear he had a gun....somewhere.
@danio3834: luckily, there are currently no fines in place for flossing.
The local news has been putting up articles about how many people have gotten tagged with this new law every week.
Just read a article about a guy from Manitoba and another guy from new york. BOTH in Rental Cars driving down Hwy 401 in Ontario and now BOTH are stuck in the cities they got stopped in because there rental cars are impounded and licence suspended. They get the added bonus of having to continue paying for the rental cars and a hotel room for the week
@Chinese Knockoff Bento: I can do OC cops...
"Sir, I believe you had a drink at some point this month... no I don't care when, at this time I am placing you under arrest for DUI..."
@13oostedwgn: you need to drop the "g"... it's flossin'
nice try homey...
Should be fines for furling when you should be furrowing. Actually, that is against the law, at here in the States. Don't know about up there in America's hat...
@inkedfusion: if your gonna do it, do it in canadian..
"My buddy bought a new charger and opened her up on the highway from the way home from the stealership eh. Got nailed doin a buck fifty five in a hundred. they took his car for like an entire week and gave him a 5 grand fine. How the hell we supposed to do a beer run now eh? like.. this should be protected by some human rights law of something eh.. Dalton McGuinty is an arsehole for allowin this law to pass.. think i'll vote liberal again in the next election tho.. Don't need no mike harris again causin the public unions to strike"
There.. fixed it for ya.
@stuntpuppy: 112km/h is a bit over 65 mph
This law is not on the Canadian books, just Ontario. And it is regoddamneddiculous. Pisses all over the Magna Carta.
@pferde_schwanz:
What you have to keep in mind is that the default speed limit for a lot of empty rural canadian roads is 60 kph, so 110-or-so is not uncommon in these settings. Also, in areas like Goderich, speed limits are dropped from 80 to 60 on the edge of town, and cops hang out behind the sign.
Unless he was doing 112 around the Goderich Octagon, in which case, Cudos to the truck driver. I've never managed more than 107 there.

The Man is everywhere, eh?
@13oostedwgn: 6 people died from flossing related accidents in Ontario last year.
New legislation is being written to ensure that any person caught using dental floss in an unsafe manner seves a mandatory life sentence in prison.
Damned dental flossers are the biggest threat to our society.
@Lieutenant LT БЯд╒╒ ®: They see me rolling. They are hating. Patrolling and trying to catch me riding in a dirty way.
Aren't you aware that I am riding dirty?
I bet this all started with a bunch of trash talk.
@WheatKing: lol. I think I actually know about 2 people that talk but that was only in highschool.. and if you subtract arsehole with sh!thead and get rid of the politcal comment
@WheatKing: Holy jesus, b'y. You nailed 'er right good.
@Lieutenant LT БЯд╒╒ ®: Simply awesome.
@DannyBN: I refuse to listen to your stinky puns.
In other news, audiences at advanced screenings of the next Fast and Furious were reported to say that it "stunk".
No opponent? Then this isn't "racing"; it's "qualifying".
@13oostedwgn: That comment was a waste
@Lieutenant LT БЯд╒╒ ®: It was merely a throwaway remark. If there is any way I can make it up to, consider me at your disposal.
@WheatKing:
You know what: this law + faith-based-school-funding = me voting GREEN!?!?! last election!
@13oostedwgn: yeah, but they'll bust your teeth for fronting.
@Lieutenant LT БЯд╒╒ ®: roger that. frontin
they use Km/h in canada?
@syrax: only to clock slapshots.
This is where Adam Carolla's rant about cops in Europe vs those in the US is relevant.
@syrax: Yeah, remember, us Hosers up here use the metric system.
I know a couple people to have been nailed with that bullshit racing law. I seem to recall a patrol car or two flying through my little town. We only have to speed like that to beat the Beer Store closing before we get home from work. Damn Beer Store hours! And before you ask, yes, in Ontario we buy beer from a store called the "Beer Store" - Bitchin' eh?
@syrax: HAHAHA yea we use KM. Were full blown metric system up here.... EH! lol. I got away with speeding last time I was in newyork cause my speedometer shows Miles as a tiny number that makes it hard to judge accurately. I was doing like 75 in a 65 zone on I81.
@13oostedwgn: Man you're on a roll today. Gotta clean chips outa my keyboard now.
@inkedfusion: the metric clock is a bit confusing too.

Y'know, as awesome as 112 in a garbage truck would be, anyone stupid enough to be doing 50 over in a 60 zone deserves to have the car impounded. At least in Alberta, 60 means you're in a city. If someone takes a slow turn or runs on to the road or whatever, you'll be in the next down before you can slow down enough to remove them from the forks.
112kph just shy of 70 mph....big fucking deal. To fast? yes. WAY to excesive use of the law ABSOLUTLY.
So i dont get it....no one in canada has the balls to take this law to court? Its all about revenue not safety.
Hell I get passed by garbage trucks, metro buses, and 18 wheelers doing twice that on 59S.
