Give the Chinese automakers some credit, at least they're starting to mix the sources of their latest designs. In this case we have the Faster SUV from truck maker Huanghai, which starts out as a Pontiac Torrent and then slowly fades into a Lexus RX. To confuse matters even more, the Faster is powered by a Mitsubishi 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. So that's Lexus, Mitsubishi and Pontiac. If only there were an authority figure around.
Clearly, the lady cops are guarding this vehicle until someone with an understanding of Chinese creative properties litigation arrives. According to The Tycho, this vehicle will come with all the amenities "from DVD-screens to electric chairs," so there will be a way to dispatch of anyone criticizing the vehicle for its heavy influences. What tha????
Max Mosley has a Lexus truck flanked by nazi models, this is just another cheap copy.
Jesus H Christ when will this end?!?! There needs to be some friggin litigation over this crap. They shouldnt be able to get away from this blatent carbon copying of everyone elses designs.
Looks like a pontiac front on a lex.
Oh. I thought this was the latest NUMMI collaboration.
They already hold the edge on cheap manufacturing, so once intellectual property rights disappear, the West is pretty much done. What's left, customer service? Are we just going to be some huge call center? Are Chinese customers going to lament "I hope I don't have to talk to some damn occidental"?
"electric chairs" I thought they used bullets in China.
@Lounatic: The Chinese government allows it to go on.
GM sued Chery over the obvious copy of the Spark with the Chery QQ and lost, eventhough the two cars were identical.
@Lounatic: there are plenty of Chinese manufacturers who blatantly violate copyrights in all kinds of products. There have been a few successful litigations here and there (Gucci won one recently against a Chinese shoe maker), but all the knockoffs are still rampant.
with our medicines having their content now being made in china, only thing left is our souls, but hell since they own them, no reason to clone those....
At least this company feeds its models.
From what I've seen thus far, Beijing has the worst booth babes. Even they seem like imitations of the glamour girls of other car shows. These girls' shorts appear to have been copied from the always-glamourous UPS drivers.
Half the time it's like being at a swimsuit competition in Tehran. "Woo! Nice ankles!"
There has long been a "culture of cheating" in China that is pervasive in their grade schools and ends up producing adults who have been rewarded for their diligent copying efforts.
Contrary to popular belief, the Chinese government has taken steps to reduce/discourage this in their educational arenas although this may not be reflected in their broader society.

For me, the only surprise of seeing a Torrent/RX mashup on the Chinese auto show circuit is how well-integrated the front clip is with the rest of the vehicle.
Now if only the Chinese culture would shift to success by originality.
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: oh man. Heeere comes the fatwa....
@danio3834: In what court were those cases heard? Is there an international jurisdiction for copyright infringement?
Woop-woop!
That's the sound of da powrice!
Woop-woop!
That's the sound of the bease!
@Bumblebee: Don't Hague the player, Hague the game?
Who knew that a Pontiac Torrent could mate so well to an RX. It's actually not bad looking...
Aside from the blatant Chinese copying of all things automotive (and otherwise) almost all the vehicles at the Chinese Show seem well finished, and no doubt, run. However, all of these copy cats will only be sold within China. If a car company doesn't have a manufacturing facility in China, they won't be selling anything in the country, because the Xerox machines will be.
Wow. I can't even come up with a joke for this. This is too much. All these companies deserve to go out of business.
Rexus: the relentless plagarism of perfection.
@13oostedwgn: or Pontexus, the relentless pursuit of imitation....and monks.
@13oostedwgn: Don't you mean, The Rerentaress Pragarism of Perfrecation?
@Lounatic: Meh, the Torrent looks a little like the RX330 which looks a little like every crossover ever built. I'm willing to accept the possibility that the Chinese are just satirizing us.
Hell, if it weren't for Buick being GM's strong brand in China, I'd think they're just selling the Torrent over there now (they already build the engine in China).
I'd like to point out that the Chinese won't even make knock-off copies of the Aztek!
@Bumblebee: The suit was filed and heard in China. It was filed officially by Daewoo.
Of course the Chinese "State Intellectual Property Office" felt there was no evidence for the charges. Chery is a State owned company.
Wow that looks almost like the real deal! Scary
@13oostedwgn:
That deserves a star!
Further proof that cousins shouldn't marry.
Their advertising slogan should be:
Huanghai...For Hung Guys!
Who'd wanna copy a Pontiac Torrent? At least copy something good.
@Chinese Knockoff Bento: Give them time; knowing them, they'll mix it with some Ssayong (sp?) to make a vehicle so hideous that there won't be a kitten left in heaven when God's through.
Come on, fellas, how can you not love it? It's called the "Faster," for Pete's sake!
Boys and girls... we see the same cyclic comments every year, every decade. The rampant copying is obvious, but I caution dismissing the burgeoning Chinese automotive industry altogether. Optimistic Americans have cast similar comments and sentiments at Toyotas and Hondas when they first started, and look at where we are now...
Soon, Chinese copyists will combine solar-cell technology with their design technology to produce: The Solar Plexus.
I think I'm having a fever dream.
Do they make knock-off dollar bills so I can buy a real Lexus?
@monkichi: Well, at this point most people left buying American are doing it for reasons other than the cars themselves. [note I said most, not all] So the Chinese will probably scavenge sales initially from Kia, then Hyundai, then when they're getting really good, Honda and Toyota. Probably not the US makers - there are still a lot of people that won't buy foreign cars. I could be completely wrong, though.
Communist chicks turn me on! Oh wait... they are men again.
They didn't even try to hide the grille, or even the head lights.
Well, im not sure what exactly to say. But its like if two of the most boring cars got together and mated, then got a boring engine to go along.
God, and its so obvious. You would think they would at least make a small attempt to cover up their blatent plagiarism.
them there commie girls are HOT (in a she-wolf of the SS sort of way)
"Better DEAD than RED!" and "MARX was WRONG" are two of my favorite anti-commie quotes .
oh, and what with the lack of color in China? would it kill them to paint some orange or something over all that drab brown?

Here's more for those who're interested.
So those jokes about Toyota buying the old Olds brand are true, eh? Oldmobile Torrier or Harriant. Perhaps the cheaper version will be called the Klugquinox?
IN CONTRADICTORY CHINA, CAR COMPANIES CAN STEAL WHATEVER FOREIGN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEY SEE FIT, MIXING AND MATCHING LIKE SOME KIND OF DEMONIC CANDY STORE, BUT SAY SOMETHING BAD ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT AND IT'S TO PRISON WITH YOU!
@Mixtronic: Did you just say I have a hairy aunt?
i cant believe that this is ok..
at first glance u would not even notice a difference from the Pontiac
