Then go and buy one. That's right, you can have one of your very own for a mere $54,995 according to Hertz's fleet car sales site. Mixed in with the dreck up for sale are a few of the black-n-gold rent-a-racers and we just found one out at the Santa Clara sales site. It's sitting pretty with only 12,000 miles on it and we'd totally snag it too — except we don't have $55K sitting around. Also, we just remembered how hard those 12,000 miles probably were. Like dog years, we're of the assumption that you've got to multiply rental car miles by seven to get the actual wear-and-tear number. But if you're interested, give them a call at (408) 296-1721. Maybe they'll even make you a deal and throw in some maps for free. (Hat tip to Kolby!)

ZING!
No, I don't really want one. It's practically the same as a Mustang GT convertible, except for twice the price. Maybe if a special edition Mustang was something more than just a new appearance package, it might be worth it.
Really bad idea. This is like buying a used Trans-Am from a guy with a cowboy hat and a moustache, a used police special dodge monaco, or any sort of VW cabrio with the original backseats.
I last saw one of those here in Vegas, on a dirt road that is meant for 4-wheelin. He had the top down and dirt was flying everywhere. I literally shook my head at him, in my most disapproving way.
And of course, given that these vehicles have some historical significance, they should not be driven like a car; more like be put in a museum, like a dead president's hat.
Sure, it is not good for the car, and you won't derive any pleasure from it, but in a few short 25 years, you can sell if for somewhat of a profit at Barrett-Jackson, shortly before you die.
Now, off to lock away a '08 Vette, WITH a radio delete panel.
Sure!
Oh wait, I read the rest of the post. It appears as if they require money.
Nevermind.
Nnnnnnnnnnot really, since I'm not one of those people who would prefer to buy a car and store it in a garage for 30 years to sell at Barrett-Jackson as part of my retirement... and I really can't see any other reason to buy one.
@AustinMiniMan: dammit, beat me to it.
Dang I just sent that tip like a few minutes ago.
and the M3 starts at under $54K, hmmm....
I rented one of those once

Good luck getting all the rattles out at the local Ford dealer, they love rental cars

Here's a full writeup.

Yes 54k is pretty expensive for a mustang with some stripes but I don't think these cars were ever offered to the public...until now. Maybe in twenty years this may end up like the Hemi cars at barret jackson. Or like Tom Cruises' GT-H in War of the Worlds.
I wonder if I'd get caught if I bought some normal Mustang GT's, painted them black and gold, and sold them for a $20k premium.
Awww. Can't I get a Jaguar X with 50k miles for $10000 anymore?
i thought my neighbor had a GT 500 because of the stripes, plastic bits, hood scoop, and SHELBY written in a million places. It turns out it's a Shelby GT. Not quite the same.
The only people who will pay that for these cars are the same guys who I met at the RM Auction a few weeks ago who were buying up 318 Challengers for 25 grand.
When will the bubble burst?
@danio3834: It has holes poked in it and is starting to deflate, that is for sure...
Wasn't one of these stolen by a renter, and then recovered months later...I wonder if this was the stolen one. Either way, like most of you have said, I can only imagine how hard an of these GT-H were driven
Isnt the GT-H just a GT with graphics and other crap like every other special edition mustang?
Who would buy a rent-a-car for 55k?
@БЯд╒╒ ®: Actually, I think youre right. At the auction I was at, a mint, #s matching 1970 LS6 Chevelle Convertible went for *only* $104,000
Take that Barret Jackson
buying an ex-rental car is like marying an ex-hooker.
Everybody else had fun with her, now you gotta fund the re-hab.
54k. hmmm. when did crack become part of the Hertz employee compensation package?
Doesn't the GT500 'vert list for less than that?
@reefer: It's mostly cosmetic stuff, but it has a different (and much better looking) nose, cold-air intake, exhaust, and suspsension mods. I rented a coupe and drove it down Hwy 1 from SF to LA. That was fun.
Let's see, $54k for a bloated convertible American boat that still uses live axle in the rear...A body that's probably been bent to hell or will be from the excessive cowl shake...And let's not forget the nice kids on spring break that rented those and drove at a steady pace of...120mph, with 3 other friends inside and all their luggage, spilling beer and fries all over the place? Sounds like a fantastic deal!!
But then again, a Z4 M roadster starts at $52k, runs circles around the GT-H, and it's brand new. Difficult decision.
@nick2ny:
Motorcycles at Stafford Motor Speedway?
We sold two 2007 Shelby GT-H COUPES at the dealerhsip I worked at... We sold them both for $35k with about 12,000 miles on them. $55k is waaaay overpriced.
It's basically just the same as a Shelby GT, which just adds intake, exhaust, Hearst shifter, tower bars, and trim pieces to a GT. The Shelby GT's run for about $39-41k at most dealerships.
Most GT500's are still fetching around $47-55k depending on how equipped.
how about an '04 M3 for $30k? write me!!!
Oh yeah! I don't know if you read the blog post I linked to above, but Jeff Ward got his bars tangled with an Australian kid in the first corner of the main event, and then came back in this absolutely EPIC ride that brought the crowd to its feet. he wound up in 2nd place. That was seriously the best day. He was the MAN!
@hwyengr: "Suspension mods" is new springs. If someone actually bought one of these to drive it, they're paying $55k for a $30k car (inlcuding the weak mods). If someone's buying one to sell at Barret-Jackson in a couple years, good luck and I hope they can recoup their investment.

hmmm...tough decision.
to me the only thing going for this GT-H is possible investment and I like the gold on black.
@13oostedwgn: Or buying a used DSM from anyone :)
Its actually only $14K but then there is the processing fee, the insurance, the cleaning fee, the gas refuel prepay charge, the administrative fee, some other stuff and $10K for not returning it to Hertz, hence the $54K.
Didn't they put limiters in the rental versions for speed or revs? They have to sell it at 12k miles because the value goes down too much after that to get people financing btw.
I'd rather buy shares of stock than bet this a rental car is going to even keep pace with inflation. How many pace car vettes have you seen sell for less than you'd ever imagine. Take the money and put it on red at a roulette wheel rather than chance a car like this is going to increase in value, and keep pace with inflation for 10 years plus recoup the storage costs. No way, not gonna happen.
That's more like a GT457 right?
