The checkered flag dropped today in Japan, and with it came the paternalistic stranglehold on professional motorsports as Danica Patrick wins the Indy Japan 300 — besting her previous highest finish of second place at the Detroit Grand Prix. The win, 5.8594 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Helio Castroneves on the 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi oval occurring after leader Scott Dixon pitted with five laps left and Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan came in a lap later, makes Patrick the first woman to ever win an IndyCar race. Finally, people will be forced to look at Danica Patrick...
...as something other than a piece of meat. Well, she did do that Sports Illustrated photo shoot, so you can probably still look at her like a piece of meat — just now you'll also have to realize she's a piece of meat that's faster than you, Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon, Tony Kanaan and your brother Sal. I really don't find her attractive, nor do I find Morgan Webb attractive.
That sentence should have said, "she's a domestic appliance that's faster than you."
Hey, don't shoot the messenger.
And I don't find her attractive either, nor do I care about the media hype about a female breaking into a male-dominated activity (see Morgan Webb for details as well, thanks cubensis) and subsequently being airbrushed to hell as the result so she can sell what, PEAK Antifreeze? Give me a fucking break.
Yeah, kind of greasy looking to be honest. Just race and cut the crap.
Great, now this will mean more pointless Danica content to wade through on GoDaddy's website..
she isn´t just a piece of meat....she is a beautifull piece of meat who can drive vey well... :)
Well done. She's always been a decent driver and IRL is set up evenly enough so that if your team has it's head on straight and can set the car up properly, a good driver will eventually get a win.
Andretti knows his stuff, she is a good driver, it was bound to happen.
Now, lets see her win a non-oval race. That will be a bigger challenge.
Congratulations to Danica!!!
in the past i had read of opponents claiming she had a competitive advantage because her body weight was substantially less than any male driver, or sarah fisher. did they do anything about that.
@MoeGolden: There is a new rule where they are going to the F1 weighing system where the max weight includes the driver, apparantly. I'm not sure if it has gone into effect yet or not.
@Jones Foyer:
Thats been in F1 for as long as I can remember.
She can have her wins. I have a low opinion of her. It's what's on the INSIDE that repels me.
I've always prided myself on being politically incorrect, but this story offended me. You had to use the picture of her in a bathing suit, when she won a race. But, I'm now more disappointed with myself for being offended. I never thought I'd reach this level. I didn't want to be THAT guy. A Pussy. I should have seen this coming when I thought Berkley looked like a nice place to live. I need to go drink some beer and eat a pig, my man levels seem to be falling.
@FThorn: Ovaries?
TaTas Rule!
Agree with the "Naah, she ain't my type" vote. She kinda reminds me of a female Richard Petty, and I don't want to do it with him, either. But at least she proved she can win.
What a rude and insulting article. Some of the comments here make me ashamed to be a male.
Female physical beauty is the basis for much of what makes humanity work. Using the word "meat" to refer to any woman is in the worst possible taste.
Danica may never be a superstar in a racing world dominated by men, but she has more balls than any of us posting on this site and deserves tons of credit for everything she has achieved. She is an outstanding example of what a woman can become through courage and internal strength that we should all envy, not ridicule.
@TheGuinnessTooth:
I agree with you on some levels, but the fact is she put herself in the position of being viewed that way. She posed for the photos. She made the deals to do it. She has no qualms about doing it repeatedly. Her win may change the way she feels about her career, but she'll always have this to live down. For awhile, I've felt that her career as a driver was stagnant and to keep the rides, she was willing to submit to being a bit of a novelty. She generates press, if not results. It's worked so far, but now she at least has a win. It would take more than a body and one win for me to keep her on if I were a team owner, though. True, she's talented but if she were a man, would she have continued this long with the results she's had?
for what it's worth, she beat a weak field since the good guys are in long beach this weekend :)
i feel so conflicted right now.
i mean, can i respect her AND still keep my hi-res photos of her in the swimsuit?
In today's society, there will always be a double standard when it comes to Females in Male dominated sports. Guys feel threatened when women start to get anywhere near being as good as the men. Women loose their femininity the better they become at their chosen sport. It happens all the time.
Women Basketball has been (somewhat) popular for some time now. So I have to ask the guys here, would you ever want to date a player on the WNBA?
Most of you guys think the LPGA isn't worth thinking about. What if a top rank woman broke into the PGA? Look again, it's been done with Annika Sorenson, who has pocketed over $200 Million Dollars, and has played in PGA Tournaments.
Back to Motorsports for a minute. I would be remiss if I didn't bring up one of the most successful Drag Racers, Shirley Muldowney.
However, when it's time to respect these women of sports like Rebecca Lobo (look it up), Annika Sorenson, or Danica Patrick, they are always dismissed as novelties. And when they do make it, negative things are said about them, along the lines of their gender, or they really are "not good looking". News flash fellas, Most of the Male Drivers aren't good looking either, but you never hear that comment coming from the "fans"
Wrapping this up, it's great to see Danika Patrick win, and a win is a win. She can't relax now, and I think she will rack up a few more wins. And I think she looks fine.
@gjdodger: NASCAR fans should be at your door now, with pitchforks...
I wouldn't kick her out of bed.
Wow... I really don't understand you guys... You are ragging on a swimsuit model that drives race cars for a living! I can't even find an ugly chick that can spell "Oil Change". If she drinks beer and will pop the pimples on my back, I think we may actually have the perfect woman here.
@jolietjake: <<<<< Somebody get this guy a F*ckin' Star!!!
That is the most sensible comment on this entire website
and gets my official stamp of COTTETFMF!!!!!!!!!!
(Comment Of Two Thousand Eight Thus Far Mother F*ckers)
She's not that hot. Couldn't you guys have featured a shot of her on the podium?
If Helio would've won, I doubt you'd be using this picture: [farm2.static.flickr.com]
We've been hearing about how great a driver she is for years, with only a second place at last year's Belle Isle race...
Its about time dammit.
And the whole "woman invading a mans world" thing is so 80's.
I'm with Jake. I always thought she was kind of cute, but driving fast made her just a bit sexy.
Winning? Sexy as hell. Go, girl.
I'm still waiting for a female race car driver who doesn't get whored out by the team she drives for on the basis of the novelty of her being female and driving. Going to take a while, I reckon.
Well I suppose there's VBH, but yeah, you get what I mean.
But good on her for winning.
@keyrat:
And some of us woulda wished they had.
@UDMan:
You sir, deserve a medal.
SHE ONLY WON BECAUSE OF LUCKY PIT STRATEGY.
As one of perhaps seven people to actually watch the race I can tell you it had very little to do with skill and everything to do with luck. She took the lead with 6 laps to go after nearly the entire field needed fuel (gambling that, in true IRL style, there would be a ton of attrition/caution laps to stretch out the fuel numbers). Sure it doesn't matter where you were for anything but the final lap but SHE WAS MID-PACK ALL RACE.
Terrible race on a terrible track at a terrible time of day on a channel that only I get.
Aside: Ironic that she wins on the day CART dies.
But can she reverse park?
@FishingCrue: "Lucky pit strategy"?? "Very little to due with skill"?
You make it sound like she bought a winning lottery ticket, rather than rose to the highest (US anyway) levels of open wheel by actually qualifying for rides and races.
This victory was earned,(in the wet, no less) not thrust upon her or purchased. Deal with it.
I think she's cute, even with her freakishly large neck.
By the way, ESPN2 will replay the race @ 11:00AM eastern.
@layabout: Can she reverse park,
or does she like it in reverse,
or does DP like a little DP?
I OM NOM NOMinate myself to interview her on behalf of Jalopnik to probe her with all my hard, err, questions, yes questions!
I guess the Jalopnik commenter weekend shift forgot to turn on their collective sense of humor.
As for Danica, I don't care if she's a man or woman - I just like seeing people from the ol' hometown do well.
@layabout:
Or back up period?
Its obvious she'd win a race,she could go faster in the knowledge she had the safest car,just take a look at those airbags!
Unification of US open wheel racing is good news.. but this week's split field events is a real dubious time to get your only win.. Regardless.... congrats to Danica.
@Bad Juju: Wait? GoDaddy has a website? For all the hype, I never bothered to go see it since all they seem to do is sell domain names, and web hosting at less than great prices. I may be old fashioned but any company that commits to spend dollars on a super bowl commercial pretty much loses my interest for the fact that I know they have to gouge me on price just to pay for the freaking ad. Nextel, anyone?
Is anyone else enjoying the new Indy Racing League a lot more than they thought they would?
It's not like it's F1 or WRC or anything like that, but there's been some pretty exciting races so far and I am pretty turned on by the tight restrictions on the cars. It's been pretty cool so far and I've been pleasantly surprised.
They do have to figure out a way to stop those massive sparks when the engine is full though. But other than that it hasn't been bad so far.
Being serious for a moment,regardless of how she won the race,she did it fair. I'm guessing Danica has faced endless negativity from her rivals. So how about we all stop beating our chests Tarzan style & let Danica enjoy the glory she deserves. After all, other women may learn from her,just what they can do if they stop dicking around trying to put make up on & just concentrate on driving.
@cubensis: @bee zee arr: @markov: @MoeGolden: @TheGuinnessTooth: @gjdodger: @layabout: @AllenK: @POLAЯ PAPAL EDITION:
and on and on..
So she won the Indy Japan 300.So what?Doesn't change the fact that men will continue to feel the need to reduce her to her looks, demean her ability and make fuck jokes about her.
Jesus Christ, get over yourselves and grow up.Women are over 50% of the human race and their gonna be around a hell of a lot longer than you guys.
Wake
The Fuck
Up.
@Calraigh:
And that should be 'they're' for all you eagle-eyed grammatical and spelling pedants out there..
@Calraigh:
Seriously,I'm glad she won. Good for her.
Hey it was her 50th race and I bet just taking a lap on an empty track at speed is scary as hell so she has paid her dues and good on her I say. I think shes a cutie besides.
@UDMan: Yes. What you said. Especially about Muldowney.
@jolietjake: And you too.
Jeez, what do you people want?!
Can you cook, can you sew?
I don't want to know.
That's not what you need on the inside.
@AllenK: Great!Good for you!
But you decided to make a lame women can't drive/''back that shit up'' 'joke' instead.
