Given that we've seen a lot of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, you'd think we wouldn't care if one was spotted out on the streets. But thanks to Hyundai's ever-changing grille designs we're actually quite intrigued and are therefore grateful that good ol' "larithmos" over at the Motive Mag forums managed to snap these photos of the new Genesis driving through Wolverine territory. We're guessing they're going to keep the price of this luxury car low by never washing it. The grille design is more like this grille than this grille or this one. But maybe they're just trying to throw us off the scent.
As you'll remember, the new Genesis is an attempt to absolutely decimate the luxury scene here by offering a large, technologically advanced, V8-powered rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan at a not too unreasonable price. Specifically, a 375 horsepower, 333 lb-ft of torque Tau V8 that puts power through the rear wheels and launches the sedan to 60 mph in under six seconds for a price possibly under $42,000. personally i like [jalopnik.com] the most, it's not as offensive as a full on chrome, and the hyundai badged one seems too plain, as well as the one with a straight black strip down the middle.
This is the grill the Genesis should have:
Are those exhausts or pea shooters?
Dear lord, that's a 5-series ass.
@Unevolved...?:
Sprinkled with a little M45 ass.
42k for a Lexus ES exterior with the ugly Crossfire grill, interior and 5-series bum. Leave it to Hyundai to take only the worst traits of all these cars and roll them into one (albeit powerful) abomination.
@Unevolved...?: I've always been sort of "yeah yeah Hyundai sort of copies design I suppose." That picture sends me into the "it's a cryin shame" camp.
I'm glad to see they're sticking to the Klingon-forehead grill. Its actually better than the RL's.
Would I be daft to say I'd gladly take this over the new Acura RL?
@johnnyichiban: Their aesthetic inspirado is pretty obvious, but I'm wondering if the ride quality will be an homage to a no-tell motel mattress.
@graverobber- Same great taste, new low price!: I think that's the grille you'll be seeing when they hit the streets - along with the 22" spinners.
I think your pics are out of order. If I remember Ann Arbor right (and I'm sure I don't), I think it should be 1:4:3:2.
It doesn't look too bad, aside from, well you know, the dirt
This is just anonymous enough that organic cammo is probably more effective than the regular sort (which screams "preproduction!")
I don't think this car will 'decimate' the luxury car scene any more than the Lexus LS400 did. I do think it'll put a dent in a lot of 'near-luxury' stuff like Buicks, Acuras and maybe vehicles like the Chrysler 300, Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima.
Holy BMW batman.
I know this is a bit random, but I'm planning on going to the AJC Auto Show sometime this week and if Jalopnik wants anything that might might be released there, just tell me.
Now I'll try to make a comment relevant to the post:
It's got a mix of 5-Series/M45 from the back, and I hope it ends up looking nice, cause that would be a nice VIP ride for like $45,000.
Aside from the obvious Infiniti/BMW cues it's a pleasantly bland Q-ship. For those who Hemi-style power and chassis dynamics without the mullet cachet.
Beware the Jaguwerk, my son
The tires that bite, the gears that catch
Beware the LexuBenz, and shun
The frumious Bentleysnatch!
Or for those who want to feel like they're on the crowded streets of Korea on the way to pick up some fresh meat from the market.
It doesn't have mullet cachet, it has high school kid with asian stickers and fart can on the car cachet.
@SRekauqh: No, not as ugly as a BMW; but it's trying.
@TriShield: What HS kid drives a full-size faux luxo-barge? I seriously doubt that the teenage Sport Compact crowd would touch this thing.
@Parramore46: Yeah, and a dashboard clock thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis big!
@rkwadd: A very spoiled HS kid.
The Klingon forehead grill is not right at all. The one they used in the Superbowl ads was much better.
