My parents had a Toyota based motor home with the 22R fourbanger. It would do 60 with a tailwind and still return double-digit mpg. They traded up when it got to be over 20 years old but it was still running great.
Looks like an '83 front, so 22R. Still, it's one good way to reduce the weight on those RVs ... many were just barely under the GVWR empty; some were even overweight right from the get-go.

Just perfect for leisurely travel: Set up patio table and chairs on the rear deck, make the hors d'oeuvre platter, get on the Interstate, make a pitcher of martinis, set the cruise control, then exit cab to go join your guests on the veranda... hilarity is just around the next corner...

I see RVs like this all the time around here; with the mini-sleeper cab on the front, and a flatbed behind to tow a 5th wheel. I have never seen one based on a Toyota, however... and if the owner intends to tow a 5th wheel, I believe that is the definition of "optimism". Only attempting the same with a Volkswagen Transporteramino would bring the owner closer to blind faith (or naivety, depending on your personal belief structure).
We laugh, full belly shaking pee leaking, tears in the eyes kinda laughs, at photos of third world donkey carts, loaded to the tits with 13 member families, all their worldly belongings in the vehicle. OMG, They are so stoneage!
Man are we soooo not evolved, did the Beverly Hillbillies not have a set up somewhat like this? Granny rocking on a chair out back, Jethro doing his best to keep the POS on the road, Jed being pensive, direct, but kind, Elly May, well just being ELLY MAY, and 'Ol Duke slobbering on everything.
Aluminum siding does not belong on vehicles.
I do however like the Toyota powerplant in the homely small town second cousin way. Not quite Deliverance dualing banjos, but close.
Final thought, merely owning a sawzall does not instantly qualify folks as auto designers.
There is one of these (ok, sans-amino, but still leaking awesomeness into the parking lot...) parked at the corner of Hwy 6 and the 401... It was pretty pricy when I stopped to look at it.
Again, who thought camperizing 75hp was a good idea?!?!?
I've seen folks do this with school buses. Commercial chassis and low price tag on the used market means fine car haulers. I've also seen someone just chop the roof off the back third of the bus to make a veranda. For my part, I prefer to keep the party space on the roof and use a shorter vehicle, hence the fine specimen you see at the top left of this comment.

@DeadFlorist: Wow, does any of that rig survive at speed? It all looks lovely but fragile. Tea or cocktails at Interstate speeds sounds a bit scary, with or without the cruise control set...
That tree makes it the picture that much better, because it's just that damned wierd.
@Ω βгåғғ™ ۞: Sucks to be you. Even my girlfriend accepts my love of beater Toyotas, and she usually totally disapproves of everything.
I used to have a picture of a non-Winnebago Toyota camper somewhere, but I think it only exists on my phone, and I'm not paying Sprint for the 'privilege' of emailing it to myself. It was so much more ill-proportioned than this monstrosity, porch or not.
This looks like a Dolphin made by National RV. I know this because I admit to owning an '88 Sea Breeze made by National on a Toyota chassis with a 22re engine.
Someone took that old Popular Science issue from 1954 where they said that in the future cars would drive themselves and you could enjoy a fine pot roast dinner and game of parcheesi at 85 going to New Los Angeles. I guess the deck is a true symbol of optimism. Now, about that tree...
No, it all folds up nice and neat like. No pics of that unfortunately. It's stronger than it looks as well. Most of the weight is directly on the roof, with only the outside of the fold-up wings supported by the pair of 4x4's. There have been large groups of people up there at various times.
There have been joking ideas floated about putting a big ship's steering wheel up there along with a whole set of secondary controls so as to operate the bus at low speeds from the deck. Well, mostly joking anyway. They always have that follow-up, "Wait, could we? Nahhhh."
Living in Southern Arizona you see a lot of RV bastards like this, especially during Snowbird Season (ending right about now). Can't decide what this guy is doing, I mean what's a Toyota Dolphin without a dinette? Yeah, dining on the veranda, I guess. I'd like to see how they sealed the big wound where the rest of the camper was. Driving these things down the highway leaves a big vacuum space behind, and air will suck into it from the rear. My '64 Chevy motorhome (resembles this abortion in it's original form, but mine is badass) at 75 MPH sucks air from the coach into the cab through the passage between the two.
@Mad_Science: @Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: I'm pretty sure this one isn't used for pulling a 5th wheel. If it is, whoever adapted it should have his head examined by a stonecutter, as the body isn't cut away enough to center the hitch over the axle (where it really HAS to be). So either the trailer rubs what's left of the bodywork, or the hitch is too far back to be stable. Or most likely it doesn't have a hitch, and the "bed" is a place for toys.

Love it! Low cost toyhauler. Someone should make these. Suppose they've done the one-ton rear axle conversion?
That's the rare Toyota Minnie Winnie with the optional factory installed back porch.
You should see the 5th wheel trailer he pulls with it.
The Toyota 20R series engine: the tortoise (as in -and the hare) of automotive engines.
My wife was curious as to why I was taking a photo of "some random piece of shit RV"...
"For my fellow Jalops!" I screamed at her (in my head).
Kinda looks like the perfect Tetris piece for that parking spot.
And with that picture, Murilee's head exploded.

Looks like a gun platform to me... Is this the real "Urban Assult Vehicle" from "Stripes"?

Maybe this is an attempt at a Top Gear style challenge for the American Version?

@Ω βгåғғ™ ۞: I call Winnebago.
@Smells_Homeless: And once that tree over to the right drops far enough they'll almost certainly be able to eliminate a row.

PHOTO SHOP!! Come on, who really trims their tree like that, Q-bert?
;)
If there's a spot there to tie down a motorcycle and a barbeque, I don't think I'd need another car, or apartment ever again.
I'm surprised after this post went live, that Jalopnik and 43% of the internets didn't implode in an innocuous "FFFWWWIP"
@Peabody S. Preston, Esq., Bruce, El Caminion: from awesomeness (I forgot to finish my thought after making sure I was using innocuous as I intended)
@CEman: Looks like a 98-2004 Mustang to me.

Smart move... Jalopnik Moment of Zen is not worth being exiled to the couch for the night (or the week)... Internalize, dude, for the win...
I think we are looking at what would happen to over the road trucks when the price of diesel gets too high.
@SSX:
It REALLY looks like a '98-2004 mustang!

HEY HEY HEY @charles_barrett where do you get off dissin' the brothers for standing up?

for something, like.. something that is worth fighting for,
like hell man there are issues...

Oh crap, we are twisting over a friggen hillybilly chopped friggen Toyota Winnagogo wannabe.
We need lives fellas,
I'll be at the NASCAR race in June. If I see this thing, I'll give you a report. Oh, wait. Toyota. Never mind.

A sculptured tree is just a big trimmed bush.
Just sayen' is all
In fact this looks a bit like my Scion Haku ps concept.
only slightly different!
better question is wtf is up with that bush?
@v8corvairpickup: id hit that.... well maybe just the front... >.<

Screw the 'mino, check out the style job on that poor tree to the right of it. Nothing like a natural landscape...

That's a '99-04 "Edge" Mustang.
It is definitely a Mustang, and yes the house in that picture DOES trim their bushes like Q'Bert, as someone pointed out...
More bush weirdness and a 225

needs more pickup
His 'Ex' got the other half
Uh, that would be considered a __________ here in Oklahoma.
a. tour bus
b. limousine
c. luxury
d. typical residential house
e. potential meth lab
f. babe magnet
g. campaign bus
Needs a squirrel tail tied to the antenna and some horns on the hood, though.

Plenty of low-powered campers in Europe and America. With the arrival of super-expensive gas we'll likely seem more around here.
