David Sneath, a longtime Ford parts warehouseman out of Livonia, hit the $136,000,000 Mega Millions jackpot on Tuesday. Rather than simply announcing that he planned to drop his job like a monkey dropping a hot penny and embark on a whirlwind squanderathon that will leave future generations of Livonians speaking of the events in hushed tones, Sneath announced to reporters gathered at Lottery HQ that he would never, ever buy a vehicle made by his emphatically erstwhile employer: "I worked for Ford Motor Co.," he said. "I won't be buying a Ford product." You tell 'em, Dave! [Associated Press]
Update: According to the Detroit Free Press, Sneath didn't mean to say "I won't be buying a Ford product." Instead, he'd meant to say "I won't be buying a foreign product," and plans to buy a new Navigator right away.

Good for him.
I get fed up seeing folk on TV, having won millions on the Lottery, saying "I'm not going to quit my job. I'm buying a new carpet for the bathroom, and maybe a shed. A new pair of pants. And a sardine for the cat. And that's it."
I'd love there to be a secret clause in the rules that lets the organizers then say, "Sorry, you failed! We're giving your cash to some poor fucker who really wants to change their life. So long, dull boy!"
He won't be buying a Ford car, he'll buy the Mercury division!
I bet he'll go buy a Jag and a Land Rover, just because.
He wont buy a Ford product. He will buy Ford products
He must not realize that the Edge beats the BMW X5 in the quiet test.
I don't blame him. Ford is an evil company that kills people. It's true.
basically he could buy the whole company, perhaps make a better job of running it than the current management
FTA: "He's even considering a return to Eastern Michigan University to finish his bachelor's degree. He's eight credits shy of a major in warehousing..."
there's a major in warehousing? And if he's only 8 credits short why didn't he finish it 30 years ago? He would have been making more money for the last 3 decades.
idiot lottery winners
I'd check up on what he actually said. WDIV states this...
And none of that prize money will go toward a big, new foreign car.
"I worked for Ford Motor Company," he said. "I won't be buying a foreign product."
Someone misheard, just don't know who yet.

@iamjames:
Imaging the thesis; "Storage of Stuff- Wharehousing in the 21st Century."
I've always wanted to be able to hold up that big check, then tear it in half, give my future ex her half, and walk out.
You know that would make the 5 oclock news....
@iamjames: He would have been making more money for the last 3 decades.
Hmmm...but if he were working a back-office, white-collar warehouse analyst job or something like that, he'd probably have been making a lot less than a unionized blue-collar warehouse line-man.
Those unions always tell me that I can take my fancy book lernin' and shove it. Until they get cut, anyway.
He ought to buy Seinfeld's flipped Fiat and call it a day.
Don't sit too close to the stage. It ruins the illusion.
He was sitting too close to the stage at Ford Motor Company. There are very few companies that working at them (and being privy to the closed door shenanigans) won't turn you off to their products.
How many people who have worked at a McDonald's will still eat a Big Mac?
Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
@ash78:
Bingo.
Allegedly many of the union guys in the UAW have all sorts of degrees, but they make less using them.
@smalleyxb122:
I assure you this "warehouse dude" isn't exactly privy.
He will like Disney World.
I guess, he won't be buying any car, because Detroit's Channel 4 says:
And none of that prize money will go toward a big, new foreign car.
"I worked for Ford Motor Company," he said. "I won't be buying a foreign product."
Could the AP have misquoted him???

@rlj676: Warehouse guys see plenty. Not the same backstabbing and corner cutting that goes on at the executive level, but every level within the company has its own shenanigans.
I'd put money on execs not knowing what kind of crap is going on in the warehouse, or out on the assembly lines, too.
@SwatLax: Wow! What a misquote! Did you forward that to Cotomer Sevis Headquaters?
the guy doesnt even need to drive anymore
with that kinda dough the stuff comes to him
@POLAЯ ИIИJA STAЯ: You better believe that's in the 'Tip' box. I'm working hard to keep my shirt!
Ford PR had better send me thank you note when this finding leads to Wert's expose on the anti-Detroit bias deep within the AP.
@SwatLax: Oooh Murilee, why do you hate AMERICA?
@SwatLax:
Perhaps he will build his own? Can we start a rumor that he is building a Se7en?
@SwatLax: That's a hellva misquote.
I'd be pretty pissed if I was Ford PR. A former employee of Ford saying he'd never buy a Ford definitely makes me think less of Ford products. Of course people have their own opinions, but if he actually said he'd never buy a foreign product (which makes more sense in context) then I'd be firing off some emails and phone calls towards the AP if I worked in Ford's PR.
hey where's my star commenter? I've been on jalopnik for 50 yrs and i've made many contributions. :sad frowny face: :(
@yellofury: driving's fun, why would anyone give it up?
i'd be bored to tears sitting in the back of a limo all the time
@smalleyxb122: All products are like laws and sausage. If you want to enjoy the results, you don't want to witness how they're produced.
@camp6ell: Don't blame Murilee! He's just a victim of what the AP was pushing on him.
from ash78: "Those unions always tell me that I can take my fancy book lernin' and shove it."
@ash78: ah, i forgot bout the union BS. My mistake.
@iamjames: I'm sure that doing blow with two seven-diamond whores in the back of a $300,000 car stacks up well against the experience of merely driving one.
@SwatLax:
Hey Sweatlax did you see below the quote..
News Headlines on WDIV sponsored by Ford!!!!
@SwatLax: You sir, are an asset to the star cluster.

Good work like this may get you a gold one.
In 10 years he'll have less money that he has now, will be divorced, unemployed, have no friends, and will be driving a beat up 2008 Ford Focus...
A Detroit newspaper... That's a little close to the Ford flag pole. What if they were "pressured" to adjust the quote to say "foreign".
@DustyButt: Sure this guy doesn't have to count on FoMoCo anymore for a paycheck, but why would he want to piss off his friends and neighbors?
I can see it both ways - undying loyalty to the company where you probably had some good times and have some good friends and the big finger to the corporate teat where you hated your job and you and your friends plotted the takeover every day.
If I won the lotto, I'd like to think that I'd soldier on in my job just to wrap things up, you know, best intentions and stuff. The reality is that the copier would run out of paper or toner, or maybe my pencil lead would break and then I'd immediately throw a Chappell-grade tantrum replete with "I'm rich biaotch" and "Kiss my ass, you crazy M-Fers", and possibly worse (dragging ass over precious corporate icons?). There's nothing like leaving a legacy.
@smalleyxb122:
I have to disagree. They see boxes in, boxes out. They have to deal with suppliers, but outside of that what could he possibly see to give him insight into product quality, etc?
If the AP quote is correct (my money says otherwise), than it'd be A. because he can afford much nicer cars, or B. he's pissed at mgmt for some personal "wronging" of him. (That's unlikely as he's probably had decent buyouts available if he was disgruntled).
It's a pretty simple formula: 1 percent.
Take the immediate payout. After taxes, that leaves you receiving about 1/3 of the face value of the jackpot.
Put all that into a plain ol' savings account, earning 3% interest (your mileage may vary, but if you drop $40M into any bank, I bet they'll be a little flexible, just for you). That yields about 1% of the jackpot's face value, every year, as interest.
Now, Uncle Sam is going to want his share of that, too, but that's okay, you're stil pulling in about $900K every year from this jackpot, without lifting a finger. If you can get by on less, why then the annual payout gets bigger. If you find you cannot survive on $900K, sign it all over to me and I will manage it for you.
Or you can call JG Wentworth to help you with your structured settlement or annuity. They'll gladly take at least half of while unburdening you of the hassle of sitting on a pile of money.
That's JG Wentworth. Call 1-800-DUMB-ASS
@iamjames ["hey where's my star commenter? I've been on jalopnik for 50 yrs and i've made many contributions. :sad frowny face: :("]: I'm not privy to the standards for the commenter star, but I suspect that openly asking for it is unlikely to get you one. Also, your multiple superheated idiotic comments on this post probably don't help your cause.
If you come into millions of dollars, and intend to buy a Ford product, you are fail-incarnate.
I am pretty sure the UAW brainwashes their members, because they all sound that stupid.
@Placebo: you forgot the barking and the "Wu-Tang!" at the end. Gotta keep it realz, my friend.
@SwatLax: Detroit Free Press has a video of the guy talking one-on-one with them. He's giving $4M to his friends, and I doubt his neighbors now will be his neighbors two weeks from now.
WAIT, i just read the article- there's a MULLET LAKE in Michigan?
Is it required to own an F-body there?
I love it how his first call was to his ex-wife.
GOTCHA BITCH!
@SwatLax: Let's see... he won the lottery... won't be returning to work, but he'll stay in the crappy house, in the same crappy neighborhood and sweat what the working stiffs think?
