2010 Chevy Camaro Gets Kitted Up?

OK, you thought those purported press photos of the new Camaro convertible for 2011 were wild? Check these out. These shots, again from the always-willing-to-market-themselves folks at Camaro5, appear to be of the new Chevy Camaro we saw teased in that GM accessory video yesterday afternoon — body kit, ground effects and all. While we're still not sure of the veracity of these shots — especially the photo of the Camaro from behind with the chrome on the wheels all a-gleamin' — they look somewhat credible. Now as to whether or not they look good? That's up to you, the commentariat. So — what say you? Is it real or is it Adobe-rex?

That wing is horrendous. But, the rest I really like. GM is doing good with not making this over-retro like the 'Stang (bad) and Challenger (good).

Pretty hot looking in red too.

Looks like a clay model/mockup. The glass looks off and the grille appears to be paper. Also appear to be 2, and maybe 3 different sets of wheel unless the perspective is really messing with me between the different shots.

Overall, change the wing and go with the matte black wheels and I would be quite happy with it.

  • Too, uh, Hot Wheels. The only person I could see driving this would be, say, the lead character in Sky High. Keep Disney out of Detroit.

  • It looks like ass, and not in a good way.

  • The tinted front windshield is the cat's meow... Don't try to look at me, I'm important!

  • GM: Hey, I've got an idea! Lets take this sweet Camaro and make it into a mullet mobile.

Other GM guy: BRILIANT!!!! Whats a mullet?

  • Looks very plastic..Can't they have a steel bumper kit? Also remind me of the car from Cars

  • I think if it had been photochopped, it would have looked much better than this. The pics seem to show various stages of the stickering process, as the hockey puck is missing from some shots. It also looks like they painted chrome rims matte black for some reason.

Overall, not impressed with the wheels, the striping, the wing, the chin spoiler, the rocker panel moldings, or the back bumper ground effects. But I like the direction of the grille surrounds and headlight covers.

  • I just threw up in my mouth a lil bit.

  • Looks fake too - the black on the hood is uneven.

  • does it come in orange?

  • Hmm, nice... I'll take mine with the body kit, hood stripe, hockey stripes, and upgraded brakes(I see cross-drilled and slotted rotors and I think red calipers). Thank you!

  • @acarr260: uh, I beileve that is just tape as they are marking out the stripes... not a finished product.

  • Something looks a little off. But after thinking through a few areas, I'm not going to speculate as to the truthiness of these pictures.

I haven't been a big fan of side skirts and big spoilers since I was about 10, but I don't know, it seems to work on this.

  • @reefer: That makes more sense, but it still makes me cringe.

  • Great. This is just freakin' great. Way to take two steps back.

GM's kinda the poster-boy for trailer-park. Around these parts, we called Chevrolet "The Deadbeat of America." The 80's Camaros bore a large brunt of this, and not entirely undeservedly.

GM's been working really hard to turn the wheels backwards on the whole Pep Boys Accessories Department Catalog Display Vehicle schtick. It really sucks to see rolled around in that kind of flour again. It's even worse to see how much of it has stuck--in other words, how easily the new Camaro comes out looking like a total shitburger.

I really, really want to like GM again. But rolling abortions like this Fast-n-Furious/Fisher Price amalgam, plus things like "Pontiac G8 Wagon? Hell no! Pontiac G8 El Camino? Fuck yeah!" on top of "Oh Wait! Rear-drive gets crappy gas mileage! Stop everything" really bite my ass.

Come on, GM! This ain't 1986 anymore!

  • 3 sets of wheels, and one with a body color spoiler and one white...body side molding is clay in most pix but grey in another.

  • Thank you GM...you guys could screw up a soup sandwich.

  • I don't know whether this is Photoshop fakery or clay model fakery, but I shudder to think what the Erebuni's and Wings Wests are going to cook up for this thing once it makes production. Testa Rossa side strakes and double-chin spoilers with fakey-fake naca ducts, yeesh.

  • I dont think I have ever seen a car thats not yet in production, much less on dealer lots, get so screwed up so quickly. Geez whats next? Side pipes?

  • @htrodblder: ooooooh... and a blower, please. hell, why not add some louvers to the rear window?!

  • That's so nasty, it's cool, like modern art... only done by tasteless latin americans!

  • Is there a Fiero in there somewhere?

  • Talk about classy. This concept (or whatever it is) is pretty much as terrible as any of the riced-up Civics. Lets hope something with a little more taste eventually makes it to showroom floors.

  • @newfmike:
You beat me to it. That spoiler appears identical to a Fiero's. I would assume it would have the same rear view mirror visability too.

  • Is this the four cylinder model?

  • Al- "I don't understand, I'm having the worst game of my life!"
Ty- "Don't be so down on yourself. You're not, you're not good."

  • That's not good at all. Too accessorized (sp) Way,way, way too 80's IMO! The grill does look nice though.

  • @JRX: nice

  • Image of DRW-E DRW-E at 10:50 AM on 03/28/08 *

It just keeps getting awfuller and awfuller.

  • That's a corporate mockup for internal review. The two sides of the car are different because they're testing two different variations of the package -- that's standard GM practice.

I think the neo-RS front end works pretty well, but that rear is terrible, and way dated in a skinny-tie-Duran-Duran sort of way. The wheels are nasty too, as is the spoiler.

  • Mock up? I think its P-shop.. The reflections on the car dont seem to match the back ground, for one. There are three sets of wheels, but if you look at the wheels the lugs and the centers are in the exact same spot on each wheel. Once sure, thats possible, twice odd coincidence, 3rd time? Photoshop...

  • Type R edition?

  • damn all thats missing is a half vinyl roof and some side pipes.

please stop this add on crap. keep it clean and get it on the lots, now!!!

  • Image of BeerDearthair BeerDearthair at 11:14 AM on 03/28/08 *

Ugly, but who cares. They've fixed the grille and headlights! Maybe there is hope after all.

  • I was actually looking forward to this car and liked the spy shots to-date, but this.. *This* is the gold chain, hairy-exposed-chested IROC Z-28 big-decaled version that everyone has been making mullet jokes about. I hate it. Take it back. Make it go away.

  • The profile photo with the painted skirts and the wing makes it look like a Nissan GTR. Vaguely.

  • Where's the line for handing an ass-kicking to whomever is responsible for this forming at? Oh I see it, right there.

  • Having gone to school for car design I can tell you this is a real design mock-up. I dont think the average joe is going to make body kits in photoshop that look like clay and black tape. Clay is the traditional tried and true way of making a full scale car design model and black tape is industry standard way to block out design details and paint schemes. You can easily mock it up take some pictures, rip it off and try out a different paint scheme. Plus the rear diffuser is exactly the same as that in the video yesterday. Also, the wing is a bit gaudy, but the overall, the kit is really sleek. I am all for it. Can't wait to buy one of theses new cameros when they finally hit the streets.

  • It's the actual model with the clay add-ons from yesterday's video, someone just Photoshopped on different wheels, painted the pieces in some and removed the stripes in others.

Does it look good? The front clip and hood look nice, rear valance isn't bad, but the rockers in black and the danged spoiler aren't helping keep my early lunch down.

Chevy better do a metallic red rather than the Ferrari-esque red, otherwise this will just look like a damned toy on the street.

  • Nice job, I didn't realize that the General was taking design ideas from the video game Test Drive. All it needs now is windsheild banner that reads "Wicked Pissa" and some Yosametie Sam "Back Off" mud flaps...

  • this isn't anywhere close to production. look closely at the grill = cardboard mockup. The wheels = airbrush

  • @deftonesboy360: You having gone to school for car design creates a very biased opinion. Its my belief car designers/executives are much like the military. The higher the rank the lower the intelligence. Just look at most of the crap we are being dealt on the dealer lots these days.

I will say I like the looks of the factory concept and the convertible. This? This just looks like West Coast Customs Pimped GM's ride!!!

  • @Schweppes: I'm with you on the mockup thing. Who puts limo tint on a windshield, anyway? The grille is pretty obviously 2 dimensional (printed), and you are right about the wheels. There are at least three sets shown, one six spoke and two five spoke designs. There seems to be 2 different wings here also, unless it's a lighting thing, one white the other red. My money is on this being a prototyper's mockup of some sort.

YAY! It seems to be working now! I would have been able to post this at 6:20 this AM if that hamster hadn't gotten tired.

  • I don't know about you, but it appears that the Boogie Down Productions crew shows some interest in the car. Wert? I had no idea.

  • Is this one of the new Fast and Furious cars? I actually kind of liked the Tokyo Drift version of the Series but this looks like it is part of the GM abomination that will be part 4. Seriously, are these the people that actually watched Pimp my Ride to get ideas? "Hey I have an idea, lets make this new camaro badass... tint the windows...and...oh yeah a huge wing! Wait...what the hell is this engine thing you speak of?"

  • Stick a V6 in it and call it an RS and you've got a true-blooded Camaro!

  • Fucking fugly as fuck.

  • How long until "Pimp My 2010 Camaro", shows up ? I'm sure that the obnoxiously huge wing gives it another 30-50 mph on the top end. If it comes with 19's or 20's...forget it ! Too much weight. Also, if the car, even in base form, weighs anywhere near the 2 ton mark...Chevy has lost another buyer to Ford or even Hyundai ! The base V-6 needs to come in around 300 hp and even the base V-8 needs to have at least 350+ hp. Will this happen ? Who knows ? Adding a body kit to something that already weighs too much and has the aerodynamics of the White House won't help GM.

  • ooo
one side says RS and the other SS.

so is the RS going to be the High Performance V6 model?

  • Whatever you might thing of this car, at least they got the drive wheels in the right place.

  • @stevecmh: Hey it's the world renowned 2010 RS/SS Camaro. Suddenly, It's 1969 all over again.

  • looks better...but not much...
