I hold a special area of my heart for wood paneling. Every since I was kid riding around in the wood-paneled station wagon, I always enjoyed this look. One particular individual has taken wood paneling to a completely new level by replacing the entire body of an Opel with wood panels. My natural instinct is to suggest that this is just wood-grain laminate attached to the body, but I can't confirm one way or another. Check out the pictures below and decide for yourself with a poll after the jump.
Regardless, who wants to wood-ify an Opel anyway? If you're going to convert something to wood, you need to do it to something with a unique body, like a Pacer. [Bornrich]

I refer you to the last ten minutes of "Johnny Dangerously," where the girl was peeling shelf paper off the getaway car every mile or so to continually change the car's appearance.
I think it's painted on.
I'd say airbrush or some other painting method, looking at the "hinges" and wear around the door edges.
A much more compelling wooden body would be a Malaise Era Country Squire wagon, redone completely in a nice cherry finish, with painted steel flairs on the sides.
"a opel"?
i saw a car in san frnacisco once that was painted to look like the body was made of marble. it looked near perfect too. i was pretty amazed.

@harumph: francisco! damn! my grammar corrections are rendered moot!
paint.
I want it.
naughty pine
would I ?!
That's not ecologically friendly. Do you know how many trees had to die for the Opel?
Probably none. But it's well done, considering.
Perfect...! An Opel chopping block to accompany your expensive J.A. Henckels cutlery... 'tho the frequent trips to the garage are a bit of a nuisance...
Don't take any wooden Opels.
I agree that it's painted, though @elhigh: it would be pretty sweet if there were duckies under that.
I say faux bois.
@sliderule: Hair Lip!
Yeah, airbrushed.
The front edge of the hood is the giveaway.
I'm kind of impressed by the wheels though, but he should have gone with smooth hubcaps.
I'd like to see a hand-carved pair of pine track nuts hanging off of that hitch. Oh, and fake wood.
real or fake, ive got wood now.
Is a wooden car more or less green than a metal one? I'm guessing plastic is worse because it's made from oil.
I just want to know who was the 1 person that has voted real wood?
Valeting this at jasons would be the shnizzle
Wood doesn't belong on ANY car, ESPECIALLY fake wood of any kind (plastic, paint, vinyl, whatever)! Case in point: Dodge Caravan. Fake wood will not make an already ugly vehicle better looking.
@wookie1901: Peg leg!!
what happens when termites attack?
@slackinfux: Bzzt! Thank you, come again.
Any 60's wagon looks sweet with wood on it. Case in point:
Heh I vaguely want a real wooden paneled car now. No wood for the structural parts, since I doubt it'd crumple zone very well, but I think you could probably make a reasonably functional and safe wood-paneled car.
The only downside I can really think of is that every panel would be crazy thick, and you'd have to use some pretty good sealant. And engine fires would probably get real bad real fast...
But still...it'd be pretty neat in some kinda bizarre anachronistic way. You'd be taking it back to the real old school wagons and whatnot.
@elhigh: they did that in the movie Taxi, too... you can ask any of the other 3 people who saw it, they'll back me up.
@sliderule:
There once was a boy named Lester who had a wooden eye. In school, everyone derided him and put him down due to his unfortunate disability. The only exception was Helen, the hunchback girl.
As the date of the big school dance was quickly approaching, Lester decided to ask Helen to go with him. After days of practice, he finally mustered up the courage to ask her.
Lester stopped Helen in the hall, and looking her straight in the eye, blurted out; "Helen would you like to go to the dance with me?"
Helen's eyes widened and she excitedly responded "Would I, would I?!"
Lester, taken aback at her choice of words, looks horrified and shouts "Oh, hunchback, hunchback, hunchback!"
Sorry.
@slackinfux: You're new here, right? Did you see that Edsel wagon a few posts back?
@graverobber: That's a classic. One of my mother's favorite jokes. The version my mom told differed slightly, and culminated with the punchline:
"Well, fuck you, pegleg!"

Uhhh its a wrap, like what they do with Nascar cars real simple.
Is it just me or are the Gawker Artists ads looking more and more like bad, tasteless photoshops?
I remember at a car show a few years back seeing a brand new Mercedes s-class faux painted to look like it was all rusted. Not my first choice but it was getting alot of attention at the time.
Saw a Jeep Pickup in the Old Car Trader mag recently for sale. You could tell someone made the body completely out of wood. Looked like the dog's lunch, although someone put a lot of time into it. I just had to ask, "Why?"
