Remploy Bosses Rewarded With Mercedes For Firing Disabled Workers

Okay, that's an admittedly sensationalist headline, but completely true even without context. Remploy is a British company in the business of hiring out disabled workers to jobs where they can be effective. It was incorporated after the WW2 to manage all the disabled workers now within Her Majesties court. Until recently things had been going along dandy with 5,000 people in their employ across many plants in Britain. That is until a couple of weeks ago, when the company laid off half of the total workforce.

Despite the seemingly drastic measures, and here's the rub, the upper management will be driving around in Mercedes Benz CLK's for their hard work. The total corporate fleet of 443 cars figures in at about 8 million British pounds, with an average vehicle price of 19,900 Quid. We're no experts in labor relations, but we're betting this really chuffs the knickers of all those out of work disabled limeys. Bet there's about the be a big row over this one. [This IsLondon]

So not only did they fire the most at-risk of the nation's work force, but they got cars made in Germany by Pakistanis as a pat on the back? When did Dick Cheney move to Great Britain?

'Murican corporations do this kind of cold-blooded cost-cutting on a regular basis, but in the U.K...? Is this yet another legacy of Maggie Thatcher's reign as P.M.? Yikes...!

  • Shuush. Dont tell Rust-my-enemy, he sells mercs. He probally made a fortune off this.

  • God is a Jalopnik regular...

She is keeping tabs, and the "interest" charge on those perk Mercs will be steep.

@Dr. Schm: At ₤19,900 per copy...? I doubt Rusty or anyone made a profit. That number cannot be correct.

    @smart42: I agree; karma is a bitch...

  • @charles_barrett: The ₤19,900 figure is the average price of the 443 vehicles in the fleet. If there's enough Kas, Transits, Corsas, etc. in the fleet the average will work out.

  • Sadly, the problems at Remploy mirror those found elsewhere in manufacturing (including in the US). Even with a subsidy, they cannot compete with cheap imports, so are having to close factories. They continue to provide employment in other fields, including printing, recycling and back office services.

Nowadays, their emphasis is on training, vocational rehabilitation and recruitment services to help disabled people find long-term employment with mainstream employers.

My guess is that their company fleet, like most in the UK, is leased. Stronger residuals make German cars cheaper to lease than their rivals. No mention of how many are adapted for disabled drivers or wheelchair passengers, but the article mentions various MPVs.

The half-baked story comes from the Standard, which traditionally takes delight in belittling state-supported social services. Its publishers were once great admirers of Adolf Hitler and Sir Oswald Mosley (headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts!"), and would have probably welcomed Hitler's T4 "initiative" for disabled people if they thought their readership would swallow it.

(Dismounts from high horse with a dull thud)

Chuffs the knickers? Pleases the knickers? Huh?

This needs to be made into a Demotivator poster. "Insensitivity." with small type "Management has it." Nah, I'm not good at those captions. But you get the idea.

  • @charles_barrett

karma can be a bitch, but not always.
The karma Chamelion I bought a drink in upstate NY started out
sweet as could be. Only after a pitcher of pina coladas did she show her true colors.
Another Karma 'n Southern experience in the Catskills was the exact opposite.
Belly slappin' life experiences aside, mess with the less fortunate and SHE will
    cut you balls off.

    Rightfully so.

  • The vehicles driven by managers and sales staff include
    two Land Rover Freelanders,
    seven Nissan XTrail 4x4s,
    ten Saab 9-3 SportWagons,
    five Toyota Rav4 4x4s,
    five Volkswagen Sharan seven-seaters,
    three seven-seat Volkswagen Tourans,
    five Ford Galaxys,
    14 Volvo S60s, two Volvo S80s,
    15 Audi 3 Sportbacks,
    38 Audi A4 saloons and
    two Audi A6s.

I think only the CEO/Chief marketing honcho gets a CLK, and only with a 2.7 diesel.

@Dr. Schm: Well, my error was assuming all the vehicles were MBZ CLKs... A mix of models would lower the average, but your list still skews to the high end of vehicles, and given high vehicle costs in the U.K., £19,900 sounds low.

And apologies for me not knowing a Lira from a Pound in my earlier post. Stupid Yank...

  • My wife's place of employment is denying her work on light duty so that her benefits will run out, they said she costed them more than the gal on workman's comp. How quaint, they seem to flaunt their great benefits package to get ppl to work for them, what a bunch of welchers. Yay, America!
