Little did we know that as we spent our time hanging around the Audi V12 LeMans concept at the Audi party in Manhattan last night that this particular model may never be. According to AutoBlog.nl, Audi's Martin Dick announced the V12 TDI would inspire a diesel model carrying a 382 HP 4.8-Liter TDI V8, instead. While this may help with fuel economy and price, it means prospective buyers will have roughly 118 horsepower less to play with.
Audi also apparently confirmed to them that a roadster version of the R8 was due out sometime in the future. How long it takes before it goes on sale, and where it goes on sale, is anyone's guess. AutoBlog.nl via GTSpirit]

Is that greasepaint, or did somebody give this pig two epic shiners?
Wow. I haven't been this disappointed since the last auto show.
@beercheck: Hahaha it kinda look like Renee Zellweger what with the squintiness and all.
118hp less to play with, but what about an increase in torque?
I was saying "Boo-urns".

@teargas: It is kind of a letdown, isn't it? It's like finding out Santa is really a middle-aged pedophile who works at the mall.
If the R8 is meant to be al super-uber, then leave it so.
On the other hand, the V8 does seem like the more transplantable, versatile, economical, relatively easily maintainable, and basically saleable engine.
What!!!!!
Why!!!!
Put the damn V12 in.
VW, you will still sell Gallardos by the truckload anyway.
For heavens sake, don't worry about inter-brand competition.
Just offer the engine. Do it.
What a diappointment! Show us the V12 TDI and give us the V8? What's up with that! So much for towing the Airstream. To add insult to injury, it looks hideous in that color scheme!
You can't really cannibalize Lambo sales when there are so few Lambo dealers. I see this as more of an "opportunistic supercar" (people buy it because they know Audi and have a dealer nearby, which makes it accessible).
People buying Lambos are going to do it no matter what distance to the dealer. I think the two cars could coexist just fine.
Audi can suck it.
Has anyone explored the possibility that even a single R8 with that much torque could destroy our roads? Think of the poor infastructure!
@PhoneticLorin: Either her, or some out-classed, pummelled boxer sitting in his corner and yelling at his trainer to "Cut me! Cut me!".
So depressing! I was hoping for the first diesel supercar.
Also, can someone explain why you're going to be able to get that huge V12 diesel in a goddamn SUV but not an R8?!
I bet you this is just typical Manufacturer tactics. Release the V8 first, wait for it to sell and then release the V12 later down the road.
What are you hating so much?
Torque will still be in the order of 600N, so where is the issue here?
Announcements for anything that will have four less holes
for man to put his piston into really makes it go flaccid.
"You have raised my hopes and dashed them quite expertly, [Audi]. Bravo!"
- Tinny Tim.
First I want to blame Porsche for it (what I will do now: §$%" YOU PORSCHE).
But hope is so beautiful, so let's hope because:
- Audi is building the V12 TDI (Q7)
- Audi is building the R8
Ok, now let's shatter our hope:
- Audi would need to develop a lot for a car, which would only be sold in very small numbers (veyron effect). That wouldn't be profitable. But...
- Porsche demands profit
Thank you Porsche for destroying my dreams!
(hm, but maybe they just want everyone to buy the less powerful versions because everyone thinks they are the biggest and fastest - and then the Audi guys come out and yell: HA, PUNK'ED! LOOK AT OUR V12 TDI R8!)... sweet dreams!
@POLAЯ HEAЯS TEH CЯICKETS: On the other hand, that means there will also be four fewer pistons at the party. So that's good. Right?
Still want.
What a bunch of jerks, selling us a diesel sports car with ONLY 550 ft-lbs of torque. How can they be so cruel?
Chip it and STFU.
@beercheck: Her in that role would be delightful.
Whatever the drivetrain is still cool as hell but that paint and bodykit suuuuucks. It looks like something a Bulgarian tuner would sell to a newly minted Bylorussian smelting tycoon.
That news is remarkably like being called the wrong name in bed.
First Aston fails to deliver on the DBS V12 in the Vantage RS. Now Audi pulls the same bait and switch.
"Hey, look at this great car we can build! Except we won't, so look at this other car, which would've been impressive if we hadn't already set the bar much higher."
Still want it.
Clatter + copious amounts of smoke FTW.
Oh wow- a concept car that doesn't make it to production?
What a shocker.....
The V-8 is a smart move to begin, as the real demand for diesel performance cars in America is unknown at this point;
As usual, those whining about not getting the V-12 never would or could have bought one anyway.....
I think the V12 diesel was too heavy and too big. What they should do is put in the gas W12.
...a 382hp oil burner will still produce absolutely stonking amounts of torque!
@racerx: You took the words right out of my mouth.
@cazin678: Screw America - Europe wants a diesel supercar!
Look on the bright side: now they'll have room to fit a third turbo (second stage).
Somebody lost 4 cylinders. . . I SHALL FIND TEM!! DOC SCHM TO TEH RESQ!!
