Look at what the Redford Theatre has done, they've gone and put "Bullitt" front and center on the marquee. Guess that means tomorrow we should go out and see it. Yes indeed folks, after you picked out the date and we shot off the announcement, this is the last reminder you'll get to start showing up at the Redford Theatre at 7 PM tomorrow night for the 8 PM showing. You'll get to see Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Duvall and many more up on the big screen in this 1968 Peter Yates classic.
So how are we going to know a J-Lop from a common schmo? Aside from you lucky few with "Save the Enzos" t-shirts and whatever psycho decides to put el Werto on a shirt or whatever, the easiest solution is to just go the AA way - name tags. We'll have 'em or you can bring your own cleverly sarcastic version. I'm going to head over to the all volunteer staffed theater (and thus only open part time) this evening and make sure we've got things straight for all you hooligans tomorrow. We'll probably have a "Jalopnik" section if we can swing it. Make sure you bring your $4 cause we're sure the nonprofit theater will appreciate the patronage. Not much else to say, we're looking forward to tomorrow and hope you guys are too.

I've got my name tag ready to go, plus a picture of Wert for good measure...
See you there.
can't wait. my name tag will bling in all of it's jalopnik glory, er...uh...i'll just have a name tag on.
Detroit gets all the fun. I wish I lived there.
When are we doing this in Atlanta? I'd love to have a beer with some fellow Jalopniks!
got the nametag made, got a facetag made, will be wearing either a KU shirt or a Ferrari polo, and further distinguished myself by breaking my big toe yesterday, so I'll be limping.
Trying to decide if I should still make a life-sized Ray cutout to accompany me.
on another note, can we come up w/ the drinking parameters? I'm gonna need more than flying hubcaps to make my foot go numb
Bummer. After I voted for Saturday over Friday, my girlfriend decided we were having friends over that night. I like old movie houses even more than Steve McQueen movies. Oh, well... Have fun!
Have fun guys. I can't wait for the Monday post-wrap.
well mike, you could just go tonight - won't be as fun, but you'd still see it.
I can't be there so I'll do the next best thing and watch it at home with youse guys in real time. I'll even print out a Pic O' Wert, write my name on it and tape it to my shirt.
@clinto:
That would be fun. We need to find someone who has a large home theater set up. I not only have Bullitt on DVD but Two Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point, Ronin, LeMans, Mad Max, Rendezvous.... basically every good car movie ever made.
Unfortunately, some of my "medications" prevent me from crossing the border.
@IN EDITOЯ POLAЯ WE TЯUST: Who is your doctor? The meds you are on must be fabulous!
@RoninianHoon:
They're called amphetamines!
@RoninianHoon: It's a little out of the way to go see him, and I can
never understand what he says, but his office is pretty cool...
Awesome idea, even though I think this place could be rife with 'hey-I-met-you-in-person-and-you're-not-as-cool' awkwardness come Monday.
Have fun everybody.
It's going to be exciting one way or another. I was a little concerned about driving my piece of crap Geo down there so last weekend I checked the tires and the spare in preparation. Because we're talking about Detroit here.
The tires were low and the spare (donut) is showing wear bars. Are you supposed to drive that far on a donut? Hey, I've only had it a month and I just got heat dammit. It's been cold. I had visitors. I was abducted by aliens. I was busy. I think there's plum sauce in the spare tire well too. I didn't taste it but that's what it looks like.
I leave work yesterday and have a blowout about a 1/4 mile from work. I change the tire in a tire store parking lot because they're already closed. Drive home and back to work on the tired donut (40 miles). Drop the car off at the tire store I changed the damn tire at twelve hours ago.
Tire can't be fixed. I have a crappy used tire put on it but now I need a decent spare (because I'm running the 96/696 interchange gauntlet). I call a junkyard and they'll sell me a wheel and tire for $35.
I get there and the tire has a nail in it but they'll put a plug in it and it should hold air. So I've got a full size crappy tire and a donut crappy tire and I'm making a run for it in a crappy car.
See you there! (god willing and the creek don't rise) I'm going for Hawaiian because I don't have an Enzo shirt or any sense.
I'm jealous!
What we need is a live feed so we feel we're sitting in the audience!
I'd bust out my press and make a "Don't Malaise me, Bro!' shirt....
That or "Don't hate me cause I'm Jalopnikan"
I'll be there in a gray work jacket with the Rouge Steel logo on the back and motorcycle boots.
I'll be making the drive from Ohio. Anyone have any interest/ideas about pre-show cocktails/dinner at a local dive, umm, I mean dining establishment?
Seeya tomorrow.
@junkman: I won't be eating in Detroit (I've got some friends over that I'm bringing to the show, so we're hanging out in Canada first), but Mexican Town is a decent place to eat. A little bit greasy depending on what you order but the food is good and service is fast. (hopefully the link works...) I've also had Greektown recommended to me by several people, but I've never actually made it there. I'm sure the Detroit locals can come up with other suggestions. Anybody know of a place near the theatre?
@junkman: Depends on where you want to go/what you want to eat. Detroit has a HUGE variety of restaurants, but there are areas of barren eating wasteland - specifically the area the theater is in. If you go downtown or up to Ferndale or Royal Oak there are great places to eat. My favorites downtown are Jacoby's and Detroit Brewery. Royal Oak/Ferndale area have to be Toast, Fly Trap, Como's, Thai Cafe, Little Tree, and Memphis Smoke
Now that I think about it, there is a great middle eastern place not too far from the theater just west of telegraph on warren road - can't remember the name, but its like a hundred yards off of telegraph on the north side of the street. That's where the cops eat so judge as you will.
I couldn't make it tonight, so I went last night. Pretty cool theatre. Hopefully they have the same 'surprise' they had last night for you guys! I won't ruin it for you.
I recommend getting there at 7:30pm - that's when the organ music starts, with the star spangled banner. It gives you a chance to look around the theatre too. Plus, it is the best chance to park in the lot right next to the theatre, for as short a walk as possible - it's not a great neighborhood. Because of that I recommend you get a very good idea of where you are going ahead of time, it would not be fun to get lost.
Enjoy the show!
@junkman: i'd be up for it- i'll be there at least an hour early.
I ended up going Friday night, but it was still very sweet, especially when they drove the '08 BULLITT Mustang on stage and revved it up before the show. The Redford Theater is really cool. I am definitely plan on going to other movies there.
BTW, did anyone else find the airport scene to be way too loud with the jet noise? I had to cover my ears.
What a great night, Like walking into a time capsule the experience alone I will never forget. It was great to meet a couple of you guys from Jalopnik (i was the guy in the dodge jacket), which has inspired me to no longer sit on the sidelines enjoying the commentary that is this site. I really thought the Charger would win this time... someday.
@typhoon5000: So did Steve
Ben has my photos from the theatre now, so hopefully we'll see some of them up in the next few days.
I'd definitely recommend the Redford theatre to anybody in the Detroit area if they're playing a classic movie you are interested in. The building is really something and tickets are only $4.
Other than the chase scene, I wasn't that crazy about the movie itself before that trip. It's much better full size.
The sound may have been harsh because the source material was a bit old but I'd have to hear a more modern movie on their system to really develop an opinion.
The Geo made it back in one piece. I had plenty of time to wonder if the weird vibration is the new used tire or one of the many blown struts. Because the radio doesn't work either.
Here's the link to the ebay auction I was referring to... (maybe)
