Watch Bullitt With Us On Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Bullitt-Poster.jpgApparently some of you like seeing cool old movies in cool old movie theaters because when we posed the possibility of seeing Bullitt at the Redford Theater, 131 of you gave us a hell yeah and 42 said maybe. Now, the Redford Theater is a pretty big place, and it's a fair bet the old timer will be able to hold ya'll, but we don't know how they'll feel when over a hundred car nerds show up. Now, on with the details

Okay, so doors open at 7 pm and the movie starts at 8 pm. Redford isn't the nicest town in Detroit — not terribly dangerous, but on the skeevy side. Rest assured though as the parking lots as seen below are guarded. You'll be treated to some really cool old-timey Chinese themed movie theater kitsch, so bring your camera if you're into that kind of thing. We'll be there early, but we haven't really figured out how we should identify ourselves as a group. Perhaps you all can come with something good, we'll run a reminder on Friday with some kind of scarlet letter to point out the nerdliness.

  • damn you detroit for being 1,961.82 miles away

It would probably be a good idea to alert the theater that you're coming with a big group. That way, they'll know they'll have to accomodate you, and, if they're smart, they'll recognize this as a prime marketing opportunity and have at least a flyer w/ upcoming shows prepared.

    @Bumblebee: Shows, movies, same thing.

  • Less of a maybe now for me. Would have loved too, but I've got a couples dinner scheduled by my me-loving but car-hating wife. Actually, she doesn't hate cars, but certainly isn't passionate about them.

  • see you guys and girls there! :D

The West coast gang can all meet up at the Spearmint Rhino in Van Nuys....I Hear Eva Angelina is the feature and 1/2 price admission before 11pm. Don't forget your singles.....oh yeah, cars will be in the parking lot so its all about cars and stuff.....yeah

"Redford isn't the nicest town in Detroit, not terribly dangerous, but on the skeevy side"

    Is that like saying:

-"that wasn't the smelliest piece of shit I ever smelled"

-"This isn't the worst kick in the balls"

  • Image of Mad_Science Mad_Science at 06:34 PM on 03/07/08 *

Damn...you guys need to put something like this together in LA.

    Petersen Auto Museum or something.

  • Image of FatBraff FatBraff at 06:34 PM on 03/07/08 *

@Bento: for anyone in Orange County...

go to cars and coffee... we can watch Speedzone on someones laptop/portable DVD player/iPhone/etc

  • Image of Bentos, Der Frischmacher! Bentos, Der Frischmacher! at 06:37 PM on 03/07/08 *

@Mad_Science: Yeah! The Petersen.....with Eva Angelina and Amy Adams....oh, cars to!

  • Being as I am in Arizona, I'll have to pass. Do something on the left coast and I'll be there.

  • @skaz: yeah, come on Ms. Martin lets make it happen in Alameda. Years ago before the San Francisco Sony Metreon opened they showed Bullit there. I missed it by one day. Dammit!

  • @Ω βгåғғ™:
No. Put it like this, Redford is a little rough and tumble, but it's not fracking Baghdad. Inkster on the other hand...

  • That would be pretty neat, I've seen Bullitt at the Englewood theater in Independence, Mo; which is an old 40's theater that shows old films cheap.

Not too far away and it has a 50 ft. screen. It's nice that there are places that still show old films that would otherwise be on just the TV. Whole different experience.

    You guys have fun.

  • I am absolutely astonished that any Jalop would even consider ridin' dirty anywhere around MoTown Mogadishu.

  • @smokeydog001 not consider

  • i'm looking as less of a maybe, seeing that the Big 12 tournament will be going on, and I still haven't had any takers for a ride from downtown. (isn't Jalopnik HQ downtown on Woodward?- possibly even just a few blocks from my building? anybody?)

  • Oh for Star Trek transporter technology. 850-plus miles is a bit too far, even for a movie I've never seen (can't believe that myself). I rented the DVD tonight, so that problem will be remedied.

So, how will all the Jalopniks recognize each other? Maybe everybody should get busy & paint up a Murilee-inspired PCH t-shirt. That'd be kinda hard to miss.

  • I plan on having my Ray Wert antenna ball. Bummer part is I own a Saturn Aura and I have one of those weird roof fins.

    I'll figure it out.

  • Here's an idea - - print a small pic of Our Fearless Leader and pin or tape it on your shirt. After the film starts, remove it and crumple it up. Then throw it at the screen en masse when Chalmers says, "Integrity is something you sell to the public" during the hospital scene. It'll be like a Rocky Horror-influenced Jalopnik bonding moment. Maybe.

Here are some swell pics to choose from: [jalopnik.com]

  • When this event appeared, I went to our resorts private theater, 13 overstuffed recliners and a decent-sized screen, and pulled out the Bullitt DVD.

    Track 14 is the chase.

After seeing it, I'm non-plussed. I like the drink for every hubcap idea, though. Humorous.

Sign me up for Ronin, or even Transporter, for chase scenes.

  • How cool is that!! I grew up near there and used to go to the Redford Theater and the Norwest Theater to watch movies as a kid... I'm 46 now. Living in Royal Oak puts me close enough to make sure I will be there. Great idea and see you soon!

    @Ω βгåғғ™: You're fucking hilarious, brother!

  • Why do I see this ending in tears and tyre smoke? There better be lots of pictures.

Also why do I get the feeling there'll be a hundred odd car geeks showing up in their sunday drivers/beater project cars that they barely got running for occasion. Which of course means drag races. It'll be chaos.

...Yeah, there better be lots of pictures.

  • Image of Bumblebee Bumblebee at 12:22 AM on 03/08/08 *

@Mad_Science: Don't wait for them, just do it yourself. Get yourself a nice blogger website, out a plan up there, and link to it in all of your comments.

  • Image of FatBraff FatBraff at 01:51 AM on 03/08/08 *

@ЯEVEЯEЙD POLAЯ: but you're the king my friend...

  • Image of Schweppes Schweppes at 03:50 AM on 03/08/08 *

Looks like the ticket price on the website is $4 ?

I'll be there, and I may have 1 or 2 friends along depending on their schedules.

If everyone made up a nametag ahead of time with their commenter name and avatar on it, that would go a long ways toward identifying each other. I should be easy to spot, I'll be wearing a black leather jacket with "Windsor Engineering" on the back in 3 inch letters.

  • @Schweppes:
Don't brag. I'm leaving my St. Clair Engineering Class of 03' jacket behind. All I'll be wearing is awesomeness.

How many Jalops will use this as the first time to wear their "save the Enzos" shirt and someone not ask them what it means!

  • Image of Schweppes Schweppes at 08:51 AM on 03/08/08 *

    @HoserDave: It's the only winter jacket I've got, I don't have a whole lot of options here : )

Does wearing nothing but awesomeness imply male nudity? Charles will feel even more sad that he lives so far away ; )

Maybe Ray could be convinced to bring along some Jalopnik merchandise, seeing as they're trying to clear it out anyways? Nothing like buying stuff out of the trunk of a car in Detroit to make you feel classy... Wouldn't say no to a hoon of the day shirt in Large, I'd even cover Ray's movie ticket as an incentive (cheaper than international shipping...).

  • Oh wait!!! I can't go...that is the same day as the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Corktown... Guinness wins out over Bullitt

  • @Tocsin: If I make it I'll be in a beater Prizm. I can't see racing it (unless someone wants to see who's the slowest) but it's got a header! Now it sounds like my hamster has a respiratory problem.

If I don't make it, it's because it couldn't make it. If you see a beat up red Geo stranded between Lansing and Redford, pick me up... ;)

  • i don't think i'll go. 2 reasons,

    1) the blues brothers had a better car chase scene.
    2) we're getting a massive storm tonight close to a foot of snow

i just don't feel like driving 4 hours and dealing with the customs guys

  • @B1663R: So, where you live, it takes them a week to plow the roads?

  • damn it, ran from the economic debacle that is Michigan too soon. Sounds like an absolute hoot.

Want to be real heroes? Put on a film festival during the Dream Cruise, Lemans, Bullit, Original Gone in 60 Seconds, Cannonball and more

just do it, you got to do it!

  • Save the Enzos is the perfect shirt for a meet-up; bright, iconic, and uncommon.

I'm having a hard time working up the energy for the 400-mile round trip, though... hmm. Maybe I should throw a seat in my PCH and see if it makes it. Nothing like a mufflerless Pontiac 389 for 400 miles.

Oh wait, I already did that with another car once and ended up puking all night from CO poisoning. Maybe I won't do that.

  • I saw this again recently on MOJO... it was fun counting how many hubcaps the Charger lost in the chase. I counted 6 lost with 2 remaining at the explosive end...

  • not sure what i'll be wearing, but i'll be the brunette in a white 3-series.

and since this is the detroit area, should i be afraid to show up in a german car? ;)

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 02:19 PM on 03/08/08 *

Youll know me right away, ill be wearing my "Save the Enzos" t-shirt.

Id suggest that to anyone else who owns that fine garment.

  • @dominetta_vitali: I'll be showing up in a german car too, so no. Sad part is nobody cares what you drive anymore since the big three fired everybody off the lines.

  • Damn. I really wish I could be there. A bit of a stretch, considering that I live in San Diego.

How about we organize regional Cinema Jalop outings? We could work with small theatres that would jump at the revenue opportunities. In fact, we could do one here in SD at the Mission Beach Plunge. It's a huge indoor pool that does movie nights and you bring something to float on.

C'mon Jalops, let's do this thing!

^--------------- I'm the guy that looks like RJD

  • I'm the guy that looks like Jack Black and and Curtis Armstrong (You know him, look it up) had a love child. Sadly it's true. Short, round and scruffy. You know, a ladies man.

  • That only describes about a third of the population.

  • @Ben Wojdyla:

glad to hear i'm not the only one, lol. my family business has several fords, so i think it all equals out in the end.

to be serious for a moment, the layoffs are really unfortunate. hope those people are back on their feet asap.

  • On any other given Saturday...

That specific one, I 'scape Detroit and'll be watching the GT1 'Vettes run like a bullit down the Ulmann Straight at Sebring.

    Next time, next time...

@CulleyCTS: Laddy, the parade is midday, this is in the PM. Drink a beer at the Gaelic League for me and make two calls for Duvall.

  • @SeanKHotay: Oh, but I know at least one of my buddies is thinking of coming down to deepest, darkest Ft Redford for it...

    Watch the potholes.

When MAD_SCIENCE and I plotted a Jalop gathering at the L.A. Autoshow, with the Loverman generating a thread for that express purpose, I went to an office supply store and bought adhesive name tags. I put them and a few felt pens into my fanny pack, and crafted one for myself that said JALOPNIK in big letters, and a second line with my screen name. I wore it all through the Autoshow, trying in vain to find our agreed-upon meeting place (which we didn't know had already left the show!) Our group never materialized, but several other show-goers read the tag and said they enjoy the site tremendously.

So wear a home-made JALOPNIK nametag...

  • Still gotta convince the spousal unit, 80% and counting.

  • You guys are gonna carpool, right? (I'm assuming mass transit isn't much of an option.)

Seriously, though, is there going to be enough parking?

  • will a Ferrari
