2009 Dodge Challenger Production Details Emerge, You Want A Shaker Hood With That?

It's been almost a full day since we've posted on the 2009 Dodge Challenger, so we assume all of you are getting the shakes. According to our tipster, orders for the new Challenger can be placed starting next month (that's April) with a total of 45,000 initially built. This same source also claims that there will be a total of 40,000 rt/sxt models and 5,000 SRT8's built. Interestingly, the Challenger RT is supposed to get all of the color options and a shaker hood for those that want a classic RT look.

Thank you for pictures of an orange one. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

  • Nice looking car, but the photos make the cockpit look like a deep bathtub - not the ideal place to drive and - more importantly - see where you're going. I hope it's an optical illusion.

Oh wow, it comes in Orange??? I never knew that!

  • Yeah I probably won't be able to see over the dashboard.
Still, a better shot at retro muscle than the Mustang.

  • Any word on a stick shift?

  • I want a Shaker hood on a PowerWheels Jeep, so yes to this.

is this car available in Orange, and do you have any more images available on the site?

Shaker hood? Does that go well with Craftsman tools from the same era?

@Ω ΒŗΔΨΨ: Oh, Fat Braff, how I do heart your sarcastic ways.

  • Since my wife doesn't wander by here, I'll say it for her:

Red sheet over an orange car? What were they thinking?

  • Orange you glad sarcasm is the lowest form of humour.

    (Exceptin' puns o' course.)

  • The thing is is that I would drive this long before the Subaru that people are doing backflips about... even in orange. But then again I guess I'm a different demographic for that.

Hmmm... Everytime I look at these pictures I want a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

Do I really need to say anything?

Come on, Dodge, get on the ball... I wanna see one in white, like in "Vanishing Point." Now that I think about it, I have to amend my answer to the QOTD: The 911 Carrera RS2.7, Jag XK120 and the Challenger all look cool in white.

Oh, and another thing, Dodge-- bring back Plum Crazy and SubLime.

  • @UDMan: You just did.

UPDATE! POSSIBLE RIM CHOICE CHANGE!@!#$ WHAT COULD IT BEEEEE!!!!

  • The interior is still crap-tastic plastic. With so much press for lousy interiors, do you suppose an American company could, at least, try to match the interior quality found in a Passat?

It doesn't need to win awards, but don't let it be the butt of every joke. If someone's got to live with the thing every day, why neglect such a major detail?

  • @DustyButt: I'm with you there. I'm in the target demographic for the STI and it does far less for me than the Challenger.

  • As soon as Subaru and Mitsubishi put non-plastic interiors in their ralleye cars is when Dodge will put one in their muscle car. These cars are bought for how they look and what they do, not what they're trimmed with inside.

  • @Ω ΒŗΔΨΨ: That's what I'm waiting for.

  • @Ω ΒŗΔΨΨ: Or this:

  • Anyone else think, as I do, that this thing is just too big??

  • @Armand4: I wish I owned a digital camera when my parents' previous next door neighbor still lived there. He had a Sublime Green 69 Roadrunner convertible, with a 440 and a six-pack (not the original engine-- I don't remember what that one was, I want to say a 383). It was an amazing car, and absolutely enormous. It's funny how silly that color sounds when you describe it, or think about it, but on an actual car, it looks really good.

    I give it 73 seconds.

    @Dr.Danger: or this:

  • Does anyone know if this bad boy is going to be at the Minneapolis Auto Show, which is starting this weekend? I don't want to go unless I can drool over this.

  • It doesn't yet have a manual trans. The interior is kinda cheezy....it's a Dodge, not a Chrysler...be damned glad it's not a Plymouth! It's obviously going to be available in Hemi Orange. It's overweight and will likely return a whopping 14 MPG with me at the helm. It'll be at the tire store regularly for new rear shoes.

Still, I want one. I dig the Plum Crazy. I'm not turned off by the size, though I wish it were a little less portly-looking when compared to the old one. I want a well-above-average automatic, or automatically-shifted manual, and at least 500 HP/600 torques.

Remember, this is a cut down 300C/Charger chassis, so it's gonna be large by default.

With the pricing the way it is, and gasoline/oil not behaving, I'll wait a few years and pickup a used one in '11. THat hurts to type...2011.

If it has DRL's, that's the first thing I'll fix...I hope this is turntable show lighting. That, and I want a dedicated rear bulb for turn signals. All fixable with a soldering gun and heat shrink.

  • @DonSchenck: Agreed. This is not the direction that the American Car Industry needs to be going with $104 a bbl oil prices.

Fast doesn't need to mean big. If Mad Ave etal can make cigarettes uncool, they can make small, fast, and efficient cool.

  • According to another press release from before, the manual's coming out in a year...I think/hope.

    Make mine a white R/T with a shaker and a 6-speed pistol-grip.

  • Image of FatBraff FatBraff at 05:28 PM on 03/07/08 *

@lemondriver: Maybe this will be the platform to launch a Hybrid-Hemi... then you can have a commercial where a little girl questions the engine in her fathers car by saying "Does thing got a Hybrid-Hemi?" "How come you never talk about it?"

  • Needs a Hurst shifter and some of that there Corinthian leather.

  • It's a great looking car, but the fact that they have to make such an overwhelmingly big deal out of it only underscores how savagely crappy everything else they sell really is. I keep expecting to see it plastered on everything from Cheerios boxes to DiGiorno pizzas any minute.

'Buy 4 rolls of squeezably soft Charmin and automatically be entered to win a Dodge Challenger' Yeah baby, it's the shizzle.

  • @Kelly: Somebody will probably come along and confirm or rebutte this but I think it will have the MDS system like the upcoming 300CSRT8. If it does highway milage will be in the high teens to low twenties(atleast 19), current SRTs get 16-18 regularly.

And, that ain't too bad. The horsepower boost in the upcoming Hemi engines will make this a VERY attractive vehicle.

  • @DustyButt: From what I understand, the 6.1 Hemi's cam is incompatible with MDS, or they would've had it from the start. I haven't heard anything otherwise, but at least that's the reason they haven't done it yet (and the reason I'd be surprised to see them do it at all, it'd require some reasonably large changes).

  • The 6.1L is not going to get cylinder deactivation.

It's a high-performanc engine and the people buying it do not have fuel consumption high on their list of priorities in this market. That and cylinder deactivation makes engines feel "sleepy" when it takes them a half-beat to "wake up" again, not in character with a proper muscle car. This is also the same reason GM does not put it on LSX smallblocks. It's also debatable as to whether it actually saves any fuel in the real world at all.

What Chrysler is doing with the 6.1L is making a larger displacement, more powerful version of it to release in the future. Somewhere well north of 500hp that we may see in two years or so.

Those of you worried about fuel prices can buy something else, this isn't a mainstream car and if automakers were truly worried about fuel consumption and CAFE they'd be trimming their bloated inventories of trucks, SUVS, and a pod-shaped crossovers that make a much larger percentage of their sales and the vehicles on teh roads. For every one Challenger made Chrysler will make ten or more 4x4 fuel hogs that people really don't need and don't have have the soul, style, heritage or passion the Challenger does.

That's how far the US automarket has sunk.

  • Just what ChryCo needs. A 'Halo' Piece of Crap. 6.1 L with gas at $3.20 a gallon. Gee, that makes sense!!

    Say good night Gracie!!

  • Image of Armand, Star-Spangled Pedant Armand, Star-Spangled... at 09:51 PM on 03/07/08 *

@Ω βгåғғ™: The best thing about Plum Crazy is that people used to refer to it as "Statutory Grape."

And anyone who puts wheels bigger than the stock 20-inchers (STOCK DUBS, for God's sake) should be shot. Or perhaps crushed beneath the fifteen-inch steelies of an old Challenger.

  • Nice car outside, ugly interior.
Even VW Golf look better.. maybe new HYUNDAI Tiburon too

    A Shame!

@Armand4: I never heard that... Awesome tidbit and a great future screenname

  • To comment on what the article says ... The first Challengers were aval for order in December ... Job 1 is in April. If you did not order one in December (on the first few days) you will not get a 2008.75 SRT. Period.

The first cars to be built are the SRT models. As for other models, engines, and options ... well, until it shows up in our order bank, no one knows for sure.

You can bet I'll be the first to let the Jalops know, as soon as Im in the know ....

  • WHAT ???!!! NO HANDLEBAR MOUSATCHE OPTION AVAILABLE ??? i.e. the Tuetels

@Ω βгåғғ™: @Dr.Danger: @Ω βгåғғ™: Let me say, you guys are pretty awesome at putting these together in such a short time. I don;t have the time or patience to learn whatever software package you used to create these images. Photoshop is way over my head, so whatever you're using would be like rocket science to me!

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 02:32 PM on 03/08/08 *

@CEman: Ive got my downpayment ready. over 7000 other people have put theirs down too.

    Makes sense to me.

  • @CEman: I would take 10,000 of these cars, as I could sell every one of them at $5,000 to $20,000 profit EACH. Not often a car like that comes along ... The orders I have taken thus far have been for MSRP, my peers think I'm crazy. I just hope they get built ...

  • alot of car for the money. The 6.1 with a manual though is optimal badassness! I hope they put a manual in it just to make it different from the rest of the LX cars.

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 12:02 PM on 03/09/08 *

    @funkshway: you wont be dissapointed.
