The Redford Theater is one of those places which breaks the mold of blandly nauseating suburban mega-theaters sporting 30 cookie-cutter, no personality movie holes. You go to Redford Michigan's oldest operational movie theater not because of the latest in high-test gee-whiz surround sound, nor do you go for the comfy seats or the fully digital projectors - it doesn't have any of that - you go to recapture the joy of the movies. Not too long ago, we noticed the theater would be showing a movie containing what many have called the greatest chase scene ever filmed, Bullitt, and we're wondering if you're interested in going.
Yes indeed folks, just as if it were the old days, Bullitt will be shown in two parts in the very cool, very swank Redford Theater, and we're interested in a meet up. Bullitt will be showing in the Chinese theater themed house of movies on two days - March 15th and 16th, so we'll need to narrow things down a bit. The polls below are for two items of bidness. First we need to warn the theater of how many car nerds are interested in going, and second we need to know which day is better for the watching. It's easy to understand passing if you live far away, but if you're in the area there's really no excuse. Come on, they're running Daffy Duck and Porky Pig cartoons and will be wailing on one of two remaining pipe organs in the city during intermission, how can you pass?

Would be neat, but Michigan is a fair piece off from Dallas
I'm with you, texan01. Ironically, I'm relocating that weekend, from Vegas to Austin, so I'll still be doing vehicular-based stuff...no hoonage, however.
Tough to be hoon-like in a 30K lb., 40' long, diesel motorhome...though I do know its top speed is a redline-limited 86.5 MPH. Sparse Nevada roads are good for something...
I would be there like a shot, but for the few thousand miles of water inbetween. One beer per hubcap, remember :)
Will you pay for my flight?
Too far from Virginia or I would definitely be there!
As much as I want to, I don't believe my 2002 will enjoy making the haul so far from home base. Now, if you can convince the Lynwood Theatre on Bainbridge Island in Washington to show one of the best movies of all time, I'll be at every showing. Since, if for no other reason, the cafe next door has $4 pints of Guinness.
This type movie should be relegated to a drive-in with Hot Rods From Hell and Thunder Road as the triple feature. I'm just sayin'.

Welp, Melbourne is a little too far from Michigan for me to make it, BUT, i have just bought a HD DVD drive for my Xbox360 (cheap too, at about $30 US) and an HD copy of the aforementioned and never-seen-by-me Bullitt, so perhaps i can watch it at the same time and simply imagine that i'm in a swanky theatre with dozens of other car nerds?
I, and probably the wife, are so there!
I'd go if I lived closer but since I don't, no can hoon.
I would, but well... I'm in Seattle, and I already saw Bullitt on the big screen last year in front of Hot Fuzz. Great show.
If someone can give me a ride (I'm right by Wayne State), I'll be there- either day will most likely work.
...Maine.
Road trip?
I'd be there if it weren't for a couple thousand miles.
For the "French Connection", I would certainly try. But not "Bullitt".
Didn't I see goatrope pickin his feet in Poukeepsie ?
@Kelly: You just aren't trying hard enough.

@kleinlowe: I'm not trying hard enough, either. Correct URL: [vids.myspace.com]
I love a good old fashioned movie night- which usually involves smuggling in a couple of beers per- and Bullit is a worthy flick, but distance prohibits participation on my part.
Now, if ya'll want to come on over to LA, we can rent the Rialto in South Pasadena and have a screening there.

Desert Storm Rally is that weekend, I'll be driving. Jalopnik should send Murilee out with me, I could use another competent crew member to stand around all day in case I break something.
As much as i would love to, and i really would, Kansas City is a long way from Detroit, and I am bound by the rigours of my daily life. But mabye Ill go watch Bulitt on DVD, turn the lights down think of all the good times I could have had.
Maybe I'll be there when you guys do an NYC meetup (but only cause I doubt there would be a Connecticut one)
I wish I could be there. I'm an organist and a car fan. What a combination!!!!
@Ches+deadAE86: HDDVD lost, didn't you hear? And also, where did you get the HD drive for the 360 for $30? They cost about $170 to your northeast.
I'm half way around the world, so no go for me. But as a person in the moving picture business, I must say it's nice to see some of the magic back. Everything is so postmodern and empty these days, nostalgia is like a far away alternate reality that we cling to, just to remember what it feels like.
Sorry it's too far away...
We've got the 12 Hours o Sebring AND the NHRA's gatornationals the same weekend here in Florida...
BTW: Will there be "Odorama" cards for folks to scratch & sniff the various olfactory attractions in the movie (i.e. fresh-roasted coffee, roasted clutch discs and tires, roasted...oh, never mind.)?
@kleinlowe:
Interesting. The trail of fire is a nice hoon touch.
That one is gasoline-powered, so explosion because of fire is a definite possibility, and we don't want to discuss the propane tank on it, somewhere...likely behind a rear wheel.
BOOM!
The boat ramp was pretty smart, actually.
I like how the writers of that piece claim it's a 'two-ton' vehicle. Um, try at least 6 tons, morons. That's a 35-footer, minimum, so it could be 8 tons or more. Depends on how much methamphetamine-cooking supplies he has on-board.
The Lyric Theatre, now the State in Traverse City is 10 years older. Not to nitpick. It has been in and out of operation a few times though.
Man, I'm only 3 1/2 hours away in Columbus, but according to my calculations it would cost me around $50 in fuel there and back. Being a poor, poor college student I think I'm going to have to skip this one.
Unless...hey, any other gearheads in Columbus wanna split the cost of gas and make a road trip out of it? I'm game!
Sounds fun. Gotta check with the boss or come up with a great excuse.
Can't, but would love to have gone....
Isn't Redford like Ghetto?
Atleast to this ann arbor suburbanite and his 'rents it seems it may be.
I'll be there though, I'm just going to bulletproof my car first.
if only Detroit was more destination worthy, I'd hop right over from Seattle... but man that's a tough sell...
@Ches+deadAE86: psshhht! and you have all those V-8 hoonmobiles- you could easily make it.
I'll be in full effect if we do it Saturday.
Gee whiz, this film (even the recent special edition set) is available for under US$16 online on DVD from DeepDiscountDVD. That would equate to, what, five gallons of gas...? Theater tickets on top? Just buy the freekin disc and pop microwave popcorn at home and stay in... If you love it enough to watch it at this point, you should add it to your permanent collection and be done with this at this point...
I love driving (and riding) but 6600 miles is too much even for my iron butt.
Ugh! I wish I could make this one, but living in NC is a bit too far since I have to do writing and stuff.
ticket prices would have to be negative numbers to make it economically feasible for me... still got the DVD, i guess.
@graverobber:
Actually, 'Bullitt' does appear on the big screen in SoCal from time to time.
Saw it about 12 years ago when Warner Brother did a big film festival for their 75th anniversary at Graumann's Chinese. Each day featured a different decade, and Bullitt ran right before 'Bonnie and Clyde'.
I've also seen Bullitt as well as 'Vanishing Point' at the Egyptian Theatre as part of the American Cinematheque series, where they invite cast and crew members to participate in a Q&A session afterward.

For those who might poo-poo seing these classics on a real movie screen (and at the two mentioned above, they were on brand-new prints), remember that you probably have never seen some of the older films in their proper look if you've only caught them on cable or a DVD. The color really pops out, and you see details you'd never catch on even the largest flat screen TVs.
Also, I was reminded upon seeing Bullitt from a movie theatre seat how much the in-car cameras really gave you the sensation that you were going over the jumps -- the feeling in your stomach you get when you're on a roller coaster.
For those of you who will see it in MI, have fun!
these may be the only two days ever when it might be better to live in redford michigan than in new york new york.
@charles_barrett: Right, I just have 32" diag. CRT w/stereo, yet my setup can scratch my Bullit 'dvd' itch any day...
i'll definitly try and be there.
@hootjigga: Not any more, $50 direct from xbox.com

Kind of the result of that whole "losing" thing. If you've already got a 360 it might be worth picking up now for the stuff that's already out.
It is a bit of a walk from the nearest subway station. Will you guys spring for a cab?
Let me know what date and I'll unhook all but one of my speakers, screw with the color on the tube, throw a bunch of sticky shit and popcorn on my floor, pop in the DVD, and be there in spirit.
I'm in. Pair it up with Ronin for the perfect car chase double feature.
...but I'll show up if I can sit behind Farago and kick the back of his seat from the beginning of the movie to the end!
