It's a little known fact that one of us Jalops spent the better part of our youth traipsing around the country in the back of a 1980 Toyota Corolla without so much as a radio installed. That first parental Corolla turned out to be a gateway Toyota and was followed by an unbroken chain of Corollas extending to this very day. This is why there is an A4 in the driveway and a Continental in the garage. Things would have been different had the Corolla of our youth been powered by a turbocharged BMW inline six sporting 400 bhp and 370+ lb.ft. of torque. Ah yes, smoky power drifts though the state of Nebraska would have made cross country trips far more palatable.

Nice combo.
Super sleeper.
The roof racks just set it all off.
As long as there are homos doing that to POS cars in this country, the terrorists will never win.
I think I need an old RWD compact. I'm not allowed to drift like that in the Benz.
love those corollas, but i think they might be the next "ae86"....used to see them for sale here (nyc) for a few hundred bucks, but lately people have been asking 3-5 grand for them. i think theyre perfect for bombing around the city
I like the offset intercooler. Looks like it's missing teeth.
@Rock517: Wait, what?
A 1980 Corolla powered by a BMW I6 already exists, it's called the 1980 3-series.
I love the beater-esque look.
Classic.
I like that they specify the bad clutch on the opponents car in the second "race". LOL
@staaave: Daves not here man
@no_slushbox: Don't mess with the 80's 3-Series
The best part is the dyno run with the little tree air fresher swinging gently from the mirror.
You haven't lived until you turned lonley I-80 Nebraska construction barrels into a impromptu autoX course.
They always seemed to be spaced nicely for 45mph.
Why do the soundtracks to these "look what I did to my car" videos inevitably suck?
@no_slushbox: ZING!
Are we sure that was in the US, though?
bet this car has a fantastic insurance-rate-to-performance ratio.
Say, that could be a great QOTD: Which of your cars had the best insurance-rate-to-performance ratio? (modded cars allowed)
@YankBoffin:
Insurance / Performance ratio - Passat 1.8T
@rexplex: Great call. I bet a lot of the turbo Saabs (er, SAABs) are up there, too. Any mainstream sedan with a small turbo engine that can be chipped.
Nice car. Too bad I could barely hear the engine and turbo under the lame OOOWAKAKAKA soundtrack.
I have a feeling that the best insurance:performance ratio will be some classic car insured under Haggerty or the like. Classic car insurance would have to be excluded given that the owner stipulates the car's worth.
@YankBoffin: I think I may be in the running on that one. The insurance on my Corrado is $780/yr, covered for almost everything except some of ICBC's silly ones. Apparently they don't really have a category for it, so they lump it in with old Golves and Jettae. Toss in a few grand in engine mods, new suspension, and Jeremy Clarkson's admiration, and you've got a decent performer for dirt cheap insurance rates.
I'm not down with the sickness. but the car's cool even though it will probably never exit a turn forwards.
@ash78: Any 2.0-liter SAAB with the Mitsu spool can reliably be cranked up to 280hp, though I've seen kits for 320+. Insurance rates get skewed by location though.
@dearthair: Good point...insurance companies tend to forget about marketplace flops from established names. Don't get me wrong. I love the Corrado...best looking VW ever made.
I bet they put that motor in the beater car so they have money left over for new back tires once a week. And a clutch every now and then....
A friend's dad had a Euro repair shop. They took a '91 Volvo wagon and put Audi Quatro gear under it with a modded turbo 5 cyl. Wasn't a beater but it looked like every other soccer mom in town.
@ash78: Guy I know is slowly killing one. I hate the kid.
On a more related note, of COURSE it beat the Volvo. More power, plus no structure whatsoever, and the weight of a Coke can... Incidentally, I was more excited by the 242.
@rexplex: No, an APR chipped 2.7t A6. White seems to make it invisible to cops, so an already low insurance rate won't increase from getting tickets.
Got to love the rural norwegian hoons. They are plentyful I was parked at that parking spot earlier today. It's pretty much always full of fresh hoon trails.
freaking sweet!
