Remember those knit caps with shards of Coors cans sewn into them? Coorsskin! Put on your Billy Carter suit of armor made from beer can pull-tabs, and you'll be dressed for some Malaise beer-drinking action. And that brings us to Golden, Colorado, where Coors is made and Discontinuuity has photographed more than a dozen cool old street-parked vehicles for us. Make the jump for many, many more photos and Discontinuuity's descriptions.
Just thought I'd send you some pictures of old cars I've seen parked on the street in Golden Colorado. I don't know much about them (except that the VW pickup is an '81 diesel), but if you're doing DOTS in Denver you might as well do it in Golden too. I've put a few observations below.
(Yellow Ford pickup) While not technically parked on the street (this is in an apartment parking lot), this truck and the Jeep behind it were too good to pass up. I don't think this truck has moved in awhile
(Green MGB) I see the owner of this MG blasting around Golden sometimes. I think he's a student at the School of Mines. He's certainly got plenty of stickers.
(VW Rabbit pickup) My neighbor is getting his roof redone. One of the workers was driving this thing. He says it gets about 45 mpg and that guys in bigger trucks tend to laugh at his old pos.
(Toyota Land Cruiser) JC Whitney Spirit of Ecstasy figurehead
(Yellow Dodge truck) Not the best gas cap
(Turquoise Dodge truck) This Dodge pickup is my favorite of the bunch. It's Job-Rated! No parking brake, apparently. I love that gas pedal. That wooden bed is in surprisingly good condition.
(Orange IH Scout) Dig those funky plastic windows.
(White IH Scout) The second Scout. I didn't stick around to take many more pictures of this one since it sounded like some kind of domestic disturbance was happening in the house back there

Tooooo much stimulation to comment.....
that Cooper is awsome and the Land Cruiser is fantastic.
Wow, that turquoise Dodge pickup is wonderful. Same with those old Chryslers.
I still need to photograph my friend's Studebakers.
That "gas cap" on the dodge makes me want to perform some vaguely Malotove - Cocktail move...
i would drive any one of these. being monocular tho i find it much easier to drive small cars which are well represented here. i like the vw bug for reasons of nostalgia...but i would like to drive an old mini just for the experience. there is an original rhd mini in the neighborhood here that has been restored and looks very nice. this is SE Ohio so old pickups are like weeds...but one in decent shape is handy as a pocket in a shirt.
I like the 69 'bird. Nice patina going on there.
Sweet! The last time I was in Golden I saw a couple likely DOTS cars but wasn't in a position to shoot them. Looks like you've got it well-covered!
wow, that's nearly identical to the Scout2 I drove in high school. for the record, that is "flame red".
This is like BENTO's dream garage!
I remember helping my stepfather repair the windshield frame on his 64 LeMans convertible. He popped the windshield out with a wire, bondoed in a beercan, sanded, painted and put the windshield back. I thought somebody who could do that themselves must be a superhero.
Too bad he used a Budweiser can. So close.....
/ha ha...hooked all you mightydog fans....
I always love to see an early Coors-cooled VW.
Love the 4x4 Driveway Dodge. For some reason those things look just right with tires that are a little too small for the height of the truck.
Just looking at these has me smelling that combination of leaky oil being cooked off the block, or the old metal-and-vinyl interior smell that accompanies old trucks.
Does Colorado count as the midwest? b/c that's about the only place in the midwest that I'd live. At least with the mountains the ice and snow seems justified.
All that rust on the orange Bronc makes me sad.
Yay! I'm famous on teh interwebs! Or is it blogosphere? Either one works for me.
@weatherman: That's an IH Scout.
I love seeing the cars of my school and town on the internet! You should see what's hidden in a good portion of the garages around town, these pics are nothing compared. I'll see if I can find pictures of the Edsel graveyard.
I wonder what happened to the hood tach for that Firebird.
Those two old Chryslers bring back memories. What is the word for massive and dowdy? The apple green one is either a '51 or a '52. No way to tell them apart unless you could see the back up lights, which were built into the taillights in '52. The black one, parked in the driveway is either a '50 or '51, with the separate back-up lights on either side of the trunk lid. Neither one of them display the flamboyant winged V which would have identified them as having the extraordinary Chrysler hemi-engine introduced in 1951 -- Chrysler's first and almost immediately legendary V-8. Those early '50s tanks were immensely roomy, comfortable, HEAVY, over-engineered cars. But, did I mention the word dowdy?
@Eldorado: Dowdy, yes, but they are as big as small houses! "I got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty..." You really could easily get twenty people in either one of those.
And most of these 51-54s were pretty dowdy in any species.
Novaload, you point is well taken. They were small houses. And the Mopars had their own peculiar ambience. Maybe I overemphasized dowdy. I really liked those Chryslers and we were a Chrysler family back in the days when brand loyalty meant something. But, I always felt a little twinge about the GM cars then, because they were just ahead on the design curve. The interiors of those cars (and their rivals) were really something. You walked in through the back door and sat on a couch in a little living room. You could cross your legs and not kick the back of the front seat -- and these were sedans, not limos. Incidentally, those early 50s Chryslers were the first mass production cars with a "crash pad" -- a padded, leather upholstered roll extending along the top of the dashboard on the passenger side. Well, enough nostalgia for now.
that mini is the exact same paintjob as mine! except mine is probably a good 35 to 40 years newer, and doesnt have the extra 4 driving lights.
it's probably my favorite out of all these pics. second place goes to the dodge pickup only for its paintjob, or the pontiac.
@rimplestultskin: Eh? So your Mini was made in the space year 2030 or something?
That Mini is from the 90s.
Finally, a pre-'74 Firebird! My dreams have finally been answered! I'm going to go drool and reminisce for a while. Godspeed.
Now that the secret is out, I might as well tell you that I have been from Vancouver to Vegas, New Orleans to Newfoundland, and Colorado seems to be the last untouched bastion of old iron. 30's and 40's cars for sale on people's lawns, 50's, 60's and 70's on car lots... It blew my mind more than california or the desert states.
The photographer missed the Maserati Quatroporte (first gen...maybe second) and BMW 2002 living across from School of Mines apartments. Those folks also seem to have acquired a 1987 Alfa sedan. Shoulda gotten some pics last time I was up there...
these cars are great..how i wish its for auction
@discontinuuity: how right you are. I guess that's why I got banned...
@bswinfor:
I know the cars that you mean, but I hardly ever have any reason to go up there. Plus those are usually parked in a garage or yard.
