The odd-looking car guru who hails from Hollywood has procured what look to be leaked press photos of Volvo's new XC60 crossover vehicle. Unfortunately, it looks like Volvo overcooked their meatballs a bit. This mini-XC90 isn't exactly "yum, yum...good, good!" The funky, sculpted sheet metal on the front fascia, doors and rear end have been toned down a little more than we'd like. Also gone are the trick door handles and bumper-integrated exhaust. Predictably, the headlights and taillights from the concept have also been swapped out for more conventional units.
This all new cute-ute from Gothenburg will look to steal sales away from the BMW X3, Acura RDX and the Mercedes GLK. Most sources seem to have the XC60 sharing underpinnings with Land Rover's LR2. That would mean a 3.2L I6 kicking out 230 horsepower and 234 ft lbs.
We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that massive new grille with the larger-than-ever Volvo badge. A design feature that will surely have Austin Powers scrambling to place an order. We hear official press photos, and possibly first drive reviews, will be released on Wednesday, February 20. Look for the debut of the XC60 Tuesday, March 4 at the Geneva Motor Show. The 3.2l is a transverse I6, not a V6.
It looks like my 9 year old took a plastic picnic knife to a Santa Fe. The specs sure sound promising, though.
Hmm. That's about the best looking small SUV I've seen yet. I know that's 'damning with faint praise', but still...
Are those taillights a bit odd? Yes.
Is the over all effect as ugly as the new WRX, Camry or any recent BMW? Not even close.
Volvo has been making some really great looking clean and simple car designs recently. This is just a few gimmick-removals away from being a really good one.
I like the look, except for the grill.
The interior is just terrible
Sorry, but Volvo is fmade in Göteborg, not in Trollhättan.
Very nice. I like this more than Ford's Kuga actually; it's not as fussy and more masculine. The interior is very smart too.
If it's correct that it's based on the LR2, it should be able to do some fairly respectable wheeling for a 'soft-roader'.
Will they be sold at IKEA?
Oh, by the way, Volvo are based out of Gothenburg; SAAB are from Trollhattan.
What's with those slit headlamps? They don't quite look in place.
And can someone PLEASE tell me why they couldn't have made it just a little shorter?
@Euromobile:
Damn...we we're too busy thinking of meatball jokes to get the HQ right.
i like it, although the nose seems to be jutting out a tad too far. @Simpsons-Movie-ruled: it's not that bad, just uninspiring. would've been nice to see something that had as much work put into it as the exterior.
@savethevipers: I'm with Simpsons-Movie---the interior is distractingly bad and bleak.
I'm also not sure about tail lights that seem to be crawling up toward the roof of the car. Or crossover. Or whatever the hell this is.
I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES, & HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL OF THEM IN DIFFERENT STAGES OF TESTING & PRODUCTION, YOU BELIEVE ME, THEY ARE COMMING ALONG QUITE NICE. I JUST CAN'T WAITE UNTIL WE GET THE FULLY LOADED PRODUCTION ONE TO TEST. THEY ARE GOING TO BE EXTREMELY NICE BY THE LOOKS OF THINGS.
@MTDVAPG: Dewd, why you want to harsh my mellow with all the shouting?

Looks a little top heavy, like a pig on stilts.
OOPS, I MEAN WAIT & PRODUCTION VEHICLE. & WHILE I AM AT IT, DID I MENTION SAWEEEEET, O HELL YES & I'LL TAKE HALF DOZEN ASSORTED COLORS.
@MTDVAPG:
Caps off, please.
nice customer sevice right?
anyways I was kinda dissapointed in the new V70 which was to me the uberwagon especially the T5 but the new design direction looks almost 90s Subaru especially the ridiculous rearend ..then the the C30 came along and I was thought that Volvo was back on track design wise now we got this thing which isnt the worst thing Ive seen but I find it hard for buyers not to look at the Infiniti EX35 as a better buy
@yellofury: Is this pitched at the same market as the Infiniti though? From the pictures I've seen, the Infiniti looks a good deal larger.
@Euromobile: I dunno im thinking
lux cute utes:
as the offerings mentioned above like the X3 and GLK
the EX is small around the same footprint as the Nissan Rogue so it could be taken into consideration if you were comparison shopping...still a Volvo does have its perks like simple and classy interiors and of course safety..but the new EX has that birds eye camera feature and laden with alot of tech for the dough
Saab is coming into the lux cute ute market too but probably a little too late..
Looks like a slightly less interesting Swedish version of the Buick Enclave. YAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNN!
@yellofury: Ah right, as I said I thought the Infiniti was bigger.
The Volvo might do rather well in the UK. It'll have a more prestigious image than most of its rivals, while it's less likely to attract unwanted attention from the eco-brigade the way the Freelander 2 (LR2) might. It certainly won't be as sporty as an X3, but it'll be substantially cheaper and I wouldn't be surprised if the cabin quality and ride were better. We're not getting the GLK, the EX35 won't have a diesel engine until a year or two into its lifecycle, and when the Q5 hits it'll be very expensive. On that basis, I'd say the XC60's prime competitor will be the Volkswagen Tiguan. Should be interesting...
This thing just looks like a Hyundai-interpretation of what a Volvo should look like. When Volvo has shed all its' square edges, I now crave them back. There's too much swoopy, trendy gorp on this design. Certainly not timeless. I even heard Volvo was going to do away with the diagonal bar on the grille. IF that's the case I think this could be any Korean brand or the Buick Enclave. Ny tak. (No thanks in Danish).
The front end is a bit of a let-down, but the rest of the car is pretty hot, at least for an SUV/SAV/CUV or whatever these things are supposed to be called these days.
After a quick look at this dog, I protest the headline.
Please replace "leaks" with "dumps".
Thanks.
Eww, "Leaks Onto the Internet" Somebody should wipe that up.
Seems very non-Jalop to have a contributor post anonymously instead of using their name.
