Those Cummins I-6 motors are insanely strong. All they do to contain that kind of power is O-ring the head. The guy who did the Cummins conversion on my crewcab has one he races. His '98 is making right around 800hp and 2300 ft/lbs of torque. Boost is 100psi.

Not half as good as a tractor pull. The Dixie Chicks wouldn't be too welcome at a pull in the south. They'd probably do better in San Francisco pulling a train.

a guy running around my old home town had a cummins 12V tuned to about 1000hp.. at 2500rpm.. that's right in about 2100ft-lbs of torque.

yea.. cummins engines ROCK.. if dodge didn't have them, no one would buy dodge trucks.

I tend to disagree with the "Laughing in the Face of Fuel Economy" part. A run of the mill "super stock" puller is going to get better mileage than the average 5.4L F-150 that you Americans purchase by the boat load. Maybe not the balls-to-the-wall 12V with a huge single turbo on it like in the video, but the average 500-600hp truck will pull off 20mpg on the highway.

I agree, the 6BT Cummins is the king of factory engines for sheer "overbuiltness" (that's a word, look it up).I nominate it as the engine of the century.

And the new 6.7L seems to be extremely beefy, but they haven't got anywhere near its limits yet because it is new. The only thing better than a Cummins is a bigger Cummins.

@Torqahontas: Indeed. Our 1-ton 2nd Gens were getting 25+ mpg. From an 8500 lb dually, that is amazing.

As to strength, I've got a pic of a 500 hp 2nd Gen pulling a loaded 40ft gooseneck trailer. He rolled across the scales at 43,000 lbs. He drove it from Nebraska to Alaska.

my friends who run tow trucks swear by the cummins.. and some of the stuff i've seen them pull out of the ditch with that little ("light duty") tow truck (03 Ram w/some serious mods) is insane

Renegade Diesel in the Lancaster, PA area. Mine was the first conversion he'd ever done. He's done few more since then. My crewcab is a 1975 Dodge lifted 4x4 dually w/ sheetmetal from a '93 and the interior from a '99.

Every county fair in VA that I know about has a "truck and tractor pull" and sometimes they just skill the fair part and have the pull.

the v8 diesel will be the champ like a mack e9 in the rig world. Good riddens to that ridiculous queer bait straight six.(I know straight six diesel- they aren't nice. simply said.)

The Duramax and the Powerstoke can't make anywhere the power of the Cummins without seriously reinforcing their internals. The CTD is a medium truck engine in a light truck chassis.

Actually some of those trucks can pull muscle car 1/4 mile times (low 12's, even 11's) and then go back out onto the road and get 20+ mpg. That's better than most traditional gasoline hot rodders can do.

@PeteRR: Not to mention, any time you can have 1 head, 1 exhaust manifold, and 6 of everything instead of 8 (with equivalent power), you're better off.

My father-in-law has a Cummins 3/4 ton Dodge with like 110k on the ODO. It's just getting broken in.
