In the wake of the diesel tide that was the Detroit Auto Show, we decided to hoodwink talk our friends at Honeywell into providing us with some of the most forbidden fruits of the Euro-spec diesel world. As a result we've been living and commuting with the not-for-the-USA 2007 Honda Civic i-CTDi and the 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 TDI for the last week. Over the next three days we'll be laying out our reviews of these cars and of how they fit the driving habits of the average American consumer. We'll be reviewing them separately today and tomorrow, with something special planned for Friday so sit back and enjoy the oil burning ride.

I love the Euro Civic 4 door hatch. I think It would have sold well here.
Way cool! Can you please do a side-by-side comparison of the Euro Honda Wedgie and a U.S. -spec Civic Hybrid? I'd like to see how they stack up in terms of space, visibility, efficiency, etc...
As for the Audi- Meh. Put the 4.2 in the A4, the we'll talk. That Tourag in drag is way too big and bulky.
No way, nobody but the domestics offers products in other countries you may want here but can't get.
Dammit! Where's the 335d????
I have a pretty good idea where that picture was taken..
@rlj676: Like what?
Diesel is a total crock of shit.
Awesome feature, gents.
Why does Honeywell have a stash of Euro-diesel goodness?
@dylanseals:
Currently I can think of:
The two cars featured above
The BMW 118i 3-door hatchback
The updated C-Class coupe
The Mitsubishi i
The Toyota/Daihatsu Copen
Historically there have been a huge number of them.
@jbarrow: They put the turbo in turbodiesel.
@jbarrow: They make the turbos.
@dylanseals: Yeah, Euro Civics are the bomb-diggity! What torque on it?
Yay! Exclusive content!
@no_slushbox: No, dont' hold back, tell us how you really feel!
@5cents: I prefer the JDM Type-R, if only it were RWD.
Ah, not a fan on the old dervs too much turbo lag, although I did drive a 635d yesterday and it was rather excellent
@jrlombard: Because there is more carbon output per gallon of diesel, diesels barely (if at all) reduce carbon emissions compared to a good turbo gas engine. In addition they, no matter how clean, emit more carcinogens than gas engines, which is a much more immediate threat to humans than global warming.
@no_slushbox: True, but how much carcinogens are released in the refining process for petrol?
Nice one - good to see the better cars we can buy elsewhere !
@no_slushbox Sorry. Until Al Gore says that I shouldn't drive a diesel, I'll still be interested.
Honeywell is sweet, they invented variable geometry in 1991. Today well over half of Europe's fleet has a turbocharger (diesel and gas). Guess who makes most of those? I've seen their cars cruising around Detroit. The diesels are coming. 330d is actually better than 335d--330d you can get with a manual, not so the 335d, plus the 330d is more efficient. Check out Car and Driver's piece on the 330d from Sept. 06. Proof is in the pudding: 155 mph, mid-30s mpg. What's not to love (besides that you can't get it here?)
@no_slushbox: Why are the emissions of carbon dioxide per unit of fuel volume important, rather than per unit of distance travelled?
@dylanseals: I believe rlj676 was expressing mock disbelief.
This is a dummy comment intended to get my previous comment to be displayed. @%#$*&^!
ARG! i want THAT Honda DUDES!!! My wife and I lived in Europe for a few years, this car to her supposedly has SUCKY suspension... well it would especially in her Pot hole filled country, anyhow this is a great little car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont really care if i kill a few bunnies driving a diesel. It saves money and gets better mpg, and if a few small animials or trees have to die, im ok with that. Bring on teh Torque!
@dylanseals: The problem with the Euro Civic is that it is based on the Fit/Jazz platform, while the US-Japan-Aus Civic sedan has a unique platform, and is apparently a better, if more boring to look at, car.
@wild zero: Yes, deff more boring, thanks for the clarification on the platform difference.
I actually know EXACTLY where that was taken - I had to reference some past pictures.
Who got the permission on that one?
