Thanks to Schweppes, the Windsor-based commenter who shot the Forward Control Land Rover for us a while back, we now get to see this solid-looking Volvo 240 with pickup bed. Since Ford owns Volvo, that makes this cartruck a -chero rather than an -amino or -ampage. Make the jump to hear what Schweppes has to say about this fine machine.
These are scans of 35mm pictures I took a couple of years ago and I thought they might fit in with the other one-off pickup conversions that have been featured on Jalopnik. The used car lot visible in the background of the second shot is this truck's home; they used to be a Volvo dealer but had their franchise pulled in the mid '90s when Volvo decided to move up market (the lot is small, and the neighbourhood isn't great). The guy who owns the dealership still has a number of used Volvos around and also owns a few low mileage Volvos from the '50s/early '60s in his personal collection but its been a few years since I dropped by and I can't recall the exact models.
This truck usually had dealer plates on it, and I expect it was used as a parts/delivery vehicle. I have no idea what engine is under the hood (likely still a Volvo unit), but a quick look through the window revealed an automatic transmission. Hopefully somebody with a better knowledge of Volvos can tell us what year (mid '80s?) and body style (Wagon?) this started out as.
Overall the pickup conversion is pretty clean, with the biggest giveaway being the 2 license plate mounting areas. If I had some spare cash to throw around it would be tempting to make the dealer an offer and then swap in a 4.6L or 5.0L Ford, or a Chevy 350 to create a compact and practical daily driver.

I saw a 740chero here in Portland recently, but was unable to swing a photo as we were going opposite ways on 224. Grr. It looked slick.

Why go through all that trouble and leave the license plate pocket in the front of the "bed" from the old hatch? Weird.
That is pretty hot though, especially with the rear wiper.

The license plate holder under the rear window just gave me an idea for the most awesomest car chop you could ever do. Take this volmino and cut the rear bed off. Then put the rear wheels up under the seats and sit on a fuel cell. Oh and give it stacks out the back. Think of how dangerously rad the wheelies could be. Plus it would be like driving inside two lego bricks.

I have a 240DL wagon and was thinking about doing this whenever I "retired" it from daily status.
Oh, and as far as names go, I was thinking about keeping it simple. Find an el camino badge, steal the 'el.

Seen a few of these. For how easily they seem to come together, I'm kinda surprised Volvo never did it from the factory.
Oh. And it definitely was a wagon to start off as. Just remove the rear windows and chop the roof above that point. He even used the wagon rear window as the cab rear window. It's an early 80s based on the front lights being the double squares.

It's an '82 ... front lights have the reflectors underneath (which rules out an '81), and it still has the 10 mph "commando" bumpers (which rules out anything '83 onwards when they went to the 2-1/2 mph bumpers).
Extra points if it happens to have that craptastic LH version 1.0 fuel injection too that was used for all of about 6 months.
I can't tell if it has a black grille or no grille at all, but if the wheels are original, then the beast probably has the stonkin' (for 1983) B21FT turbo engine. Screw the V8 conversion!

A guy I know in Springfield has one of these too - it's based on a 240 wagon, though, so it's a little bit bigger. It also has more parts made out of rusty diamond plate and angle iron. He calls it his El Cavolvo. And he's actually Scandanavian, so that's the legit name for such a vehicle.
I'm going to have to pay a visit soon, with camera in tow...

Actually due to our crash bumper regulations, we didn't get the 83' style until 86. So therefore, it could be anything up to 85'.
@kmulcair: My grandfather lives near the dealership too, which is why I was in the area.
@walt_chisel: Yes, the Volvo lives in London. The dealership used to be Eastgate Volvo, but now it's something like Silver City Auto (and I think it has been for the last 10 years or so?).
Remember, the number designation was not officially used between '80-'85, so I'd say that this is indeed an '82, but it's a GL wagon.
DL's had a different grille with the logo on the center, GL's had the offset grille. GL's gained the front air dam from the GLT models for this year. GL's also came with alloy wheels. Then again, Virgos are now as common as wiring harness failures.
