A new braking feature in Toyota vehicles links up the braking system with your GPS navigation—ultimately getting us one step closer to full automated butler cars capable to taking you anywhere. The system works by recognizing area with stop signs or other stopping requirements and cross-referencing with road markings that designate an impending stop.
When the system knows you are approaching an intersection it recognizes as having a stop sign, it will begin to audibly and visually warn you to slow the eff down. It will continue to analyze the speed as you approach the impending stop, then decide whether to give you a little help with additional braking force. The system is currently being tested in Japan. Toyota has got to be the most forward-thinking company ever. While spending the last 20 or so odd years developing cars that will put you to sleep, they've also begun developing technology that will allow drivers to fall asleep safely. Brilliant.
I'll pass. Big brother can go ahead and stay out of my car, thankyouverymuch.
Additionally, it's just promoting laziness...much like the automatic transmission.
This sounds very scary. Given how inaccurate GPS systems can be, I can imagine the car deciding to stamp on the brakes in the middle of the highway.
I'm all for warnings to let you know of impending danger, but please don't start taking control of the car, I don't trust the automated systems enough yet.
I hope that they do regular Updates. If they base where to stop on Mapquest maps, my Prius will slam on the brakes in the middle of the 405. (Not that I don't constatly stop on the 405 due to traffic anyway)
@pres: Also just like the 3 point seatbelt, Driver Airbag, Power Assist for Steering and Brakes, Cruise Control, Heat and A/C, or how about functional Wipers?
"Hey Izanagi, check out what my car can do..."
"Uh, Hiroshi, don't you think you ought to slow down?"
"Don't worry, relax and enjoy the show... wait this isn't right! AAAAAAHHHHH CCCCCRRRRRRAAAAAAPPPPPP!"
Obviously Toyota has never heard of the "California roll-through", whereby you only come to a complete stop if , when you have slowed to 2 or 3 mph, you actually spot another vehicle at or approaching the intersection. This thing would make driving in low-traffic neighborhood very hurky-jerky... Meh.
Great idea. Now tie this system into the police department and they can issues e-tickets every time you run through a stop sign. Complete automated law enforcement. Sign me up Big Brother!
@pres: I fully agree. Considering i have seen myself (on the nav screen) floating about a mile off the coast along pch, driving in what appears to be an out of bouds ski area...I will skip any and all attempts for my car to "help" me.
And when the pigs... oops, I mean the cops decide they want to talk to you, they don't bother to turn on the lights and siren anymore...
I guess things have deteriorated in CA--they used to have the "California Curtsey" where you made a token touch of the brakes before rolling on through.
This Toyota Brake is just a disaster. The liability on such a device would be so crippling no one would ever make it.
considering this is designed for markers on the road that I don't believe exist on US roads and it identifies Japanese stop signs, will this even work in the US?
Also, if this thing stops my car, how am I suppose to run stop signs anymore?
Does this mean it'll be easier for me to kick back at the end of the day earlier? Not that I endorse drinking and driving, but drinking and riding sound ok to me.
"sounds"
Fuck you Toyota. Fuck you. Stay out of my car.
