What's So Puzzling About The Honda FCX Clarity?

Pardon me for being baffled, but something about this latest Honda FCX Clarity ad has me a little puzzled. Rubik's Cubes, geometric puzzles, traditional puzzles, Rube Goldberg machines and a hydrogen-powered Honda? I'll spoil the ending for you: I guess it's all about "solving problems," but until I can stick a garden hose into my car and drive across the state of Texas, Honda isn't solving any problem but confusing the hell out of me with artsy commercials. • An entertaining ad. But to go off on a tangent, am I the only one who wishes the new Accord looked more like the Clarity?

I actually get the message. People working together, solving problems, and having fun while solving problems. It's a subliminal message that states "We at Honda have the best problem solvers (engineers) than anyone else". Or that's what I think it says.

@johnnyichiban: Yes, the new Accord does absolutely nothing for me, and was really no better than the previous version.

  • That add was only made better by the fact that they used the song "Ping Island" from The Life Aquatic

  • @johnnyichiban: Yes. Yes, you are.

  • @UDMAN: I Actually like the new accord.

The music by Mark Mothersbaugh and the voice over by Garrison Keillor. Way to know your demographic.

  • Ping island/lightning strike rescue op!!!

Really not too bad of a commercial -

@johnnyichiban: I agree with you. It looks so much swoopier than the Accord, without losing the convenience of the rear doors.

  • 72" wheels! FTW

  • @teargas: @tayLOVE: YES! The Life Aquatic soundtrack is probably the best soundtrack, ever.

Wow. That's awesome. The Life Aquatic soundtrack, Garrison Keiler (sp?) narrator, and a tie-in to a famous Mr. Honda saying:

"An engineer is lucky when he encounters a problem, because he then gets to solve it"

I wish the spirit of that company correlated to more cars that I'd like to buy.

  • for a name like clarity, the commercials confuse the crap out of me. I mean, I get it, solve hybrid puzzle, solve solar puzzle, maybe a hydrogen logo thrown in there, and it all adds up to something that looks like a Donk'd Prius that goes "WOO-WOO!". Wait, can you put a whistle tip in a H powered car? Ill just program my "auto tire squealer replicator" to play a clip of Rubb Bubb.

  • The spot is not Clarity specific. It's just one in a long string of commercials highlighting Honda's Challenging Spirt. This one with a focus on a commitment to the environment. Engineering-wise you can't knock Honda's forward-looking vision.

  • @johnnyichiban:
    No, no you're not.

  • This only ran in the UK. Garrison Keillor does not do commercial voiceovers in the USA. Generally speaking, advertising in Britain is different than in the USA, kind of like how Ford offers crappy cars here and nice cars there. Or Volkswagen introduces a model there and then we get it half a lifetime later.

I'm just a stupid American. They would never run that spot here. I'd be, har, har, puzzled by it (slaps knee and spits in spitoon).

  • Solving Problems? Maybe we can send some of those Honda engineers to Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Gaza, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Kenya, Liberia, North Korea, China, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwe, East Timor, Turkmenistan, Belarus, and Belgium!

  • I've gotta problem for you Honda guys; the new RL is really really really really really ugly.

  • For what it's worth, I casted that TVC in South Africa and it's made by the same team who made the utterly brilliant Honda "Cog" commercial. This one is barely as good.

On another note, David The Spaniard as we called him on set, the Rubik's cube guy, could solve a cube backwards or forwards in around 10 seconds. He could also juggle two cubes in one hand and solve a third cube in the other and continue until all cubes were solved. Fun times.

  • Can I dump all of the batteries i steal from work into a tank of water, and barring an explosion, extract Hydrogen?
