The most beautiful and highly anticipated next-generation racing simulator is inching its way towards completion. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is the name of the game, and we've got a preview. "Prologue" means it's not the full game. Actually, it's like a glorified demo that will cost $40, include 5 tracks, 16-player online racing and more than 30 cars. Prologue is slated for an April 17 release date on the PlayStation 3, with the full GT5 game coming sooner or later. At least by the time PlayStation Ocho rolls around. [Techeblog]

Is GT5 Prologue out today, or is it coming out on April 15? I'm confused.
wow. That's hard to believe. I gotta' buy a better tv and GT5 when it comes out.
Amazing video...but....why...won't...this...guy...stop...talking?
I wonder if this will out the ps3 on top pf the heap?
Yeah, they need to release this already. The perfect is the enemy of the good and shit like that.
Gotta get a wireless steering wheel for my PS3...
I wonder if you can customize the cars in this like you could in past full versions. Anyone know?
The graphics look amazing like all the GT games. But I'm probably gonna stick with forza becuase of better customization of cars and better online community.
That BMW driver really does drive like a BMW driver.
Seriously though, that looks epic. Initial reviews said the cars drove worse than they did in GT4, but I'll wait and see because I hope not. And it's a cliched question, but isn't there car damage this time?
someday they will create damage to the cars when hit
I think that will be tantamount for the next iteration
@yellofury:
I thought there was going to be damage to the cars in this version. Even if there isn't damage, I at least hope the cars slow down a lot when they hit a wall. I have too many friends that I race against on GT4 that use walls to gain an advantage through corners. It's unrealistic, and pretty crappy on their part, but I still usually win most races anyway.
The graphics are slick, but the physics might not be as good as they could be. Some of the car movements don't look too realistic. There's also the age-old question of physical crash damage...
Race entry level cars, like the Suzuki Swift or Acura Integra Type R? I'll take 'totally useless matchups for 1000 Alex'
@Euromobile: @grzydj: @yellofury: Crash damage...? I guess you would need that... IF YOU SUCK.
jk
Please stop posting GT5 news, I've resigned myself to having a $100 pawn shop TV and PS2 since saving money is so much more important. You're not helping.
From what you guys are saying I don't see any reason this will be better than Forza 2 other than the cockpit view, marginally better graphics, and a possible larger selection of cars.
I turned my Integra type-r into a RWD monster.... def makes for some fun online, drivetrain swaps are the shit... an option not available in GT.
I can't wait to play this in my car, while I'm driving.
gt5p = wood
i still <3 forza 2 though
@reefer:
Forza has tried to appeal to a wider demographic, the driving is still difficult but it's no simulation. Tuning the car is counter-intuitive to real life and the racing classifications they have changed where convienient, such as the GT1 cars being far better than the GT500 cars merely because they look like supercars.
Gran Turismo offers a much more realistc approach, cars mimic their real life counterparts and the handling is far different.
Forza just strikes me as trying to be a game first and a simulator second. While with Gran Turismo it's the other way around. Yes, that's not a bad thing, but for some who cannot experience real life racing, Gran Turismo is the best option.
No customization in Prologue but I'm sure they will in the final version. Graphics are awesome but no damage yet. Hopefully on the actual GT5 release they'll have something implemented rather than the current penalty system. The track introduction is an interesting new feature.
@TheTooth:
Nope, I played the japanese version of the game and you can't tune your cars.
There's no crash damage neither in prologue although it is rumored to be part of the full game.
I second, GT series is beautiful to look at but the physics are not so good. rFactor is my sim of choice.
$40 is a bit steep for something that ultimately is really just a simplified version of the game that everyone will buy for $60 when it comes out. I'd rather just keep plugging away at GT4 until the real GT5 comes out.
You'll need to shell out $40..If only...how about 600 for the PS3 thousands for an HDTV, new sound system would be good, a new wheel, some new furniture. I need to start saving now.
Why can't I just get to download the fuckin demo like Japan?
What was the whole point of being able to connect to the internet?
If you're gonna buy the demo for $40, you better hope you'll be able to buy the complete version with a trade-in program credit towards the final price.
@crazygutgut:
This (the real GT5, not the "prologue" stuff) and FFXIII (which i'm rather excited about for some incomprehensible reason) mean i'm buying a PS3. What that means in the long run i do not know, and i'm probably going to wait until i can pick up one used and cheap because i am not made of money, but i will have it.
@kahos:
The guy in charge of GT5 has said something like "if we don't have very realistic damage modeling in GT5 we may as well not even bother". We'll see how that pans out.
@Shapeshifter: I hope that's true. Until I perfected the chicane in the tunnel on Special Stage R11 in Gran Turismo, I always thought that stacking half of the car into a wall at 100mph should have been a catastrophic event: wheel in the footwell, bodywork totalled, engine out on the road in a pool of oil.
The GT HD Concept had great looking models, but the sounds the cars made seemed a bit generic by comparison. I hope those improve in GT5.
Finally there are dashboards! No more having to drive from the front bumper. I'll stick to GTR2 and upcoming GTR3 on pc but this looks like the console racing fans will be very happy.
@bmoredlj:
Having played both the GT:HD demo and the new GT5 Prologue (I live in Japan.) I can say that while the HD demo was just GT4, but prettier, the Prologue is the real deal. It is fully, and profundly, better than the HD teaser and well worth the wait. The look and feel, even through a beat-up PS3 demo store controller, is vastly improved. The addition of 16 on the grid was cool as well. Having that much more traffic to weave through is WAY more fun than the old HD4 grid of just 6 cars. Add that to the improved physics, sounds and AI and it is a truly next level experience.
