One of our attentive readers happened to spot what looks to be one of the first (if not the first) production versions of the 2009 BMW X6, specifically an xDrive35i model. Since this car isn't on sale until after March, the most likely place you'd find one running around on the streets is in upstate South Carolina, the base of BMW's manufacturing operations. This is the first we've seen an X6 in black and, we must say, it's a good look for the "Sports Activity Coupe." The full report on how this X6 was gotten below.
I live in the Upstate area of South Carolina, home of BMW Manufacturing. I spotted this X6 a few days ago at a local Micky D's. Got out and walked around the car.Absolutely beautiful automobile. First Black X6 I've seen anywhere. This car appears to be a finished production model.Car had no camo, all badges and BMW logo's were clearly visible. This car is a take home tester for a BMW Manager. From a distance the car appears to be smaller, almost sedan sized, until you get close to the car.I'm about 5'10'' tall and the top of the X6's rear hatch hits me about mid chest. Then you realize this is a fairly large car and related to the X5.This car looks much, much better in person. The photos just don't do it justice. The car has an awesome street stance and presence.Big thanks to David for tracking this one down for us.

I snapped a cell phone pic of a white one in SC on I-85 2 weeks ago, but didn't think to send it in. I was just so happy i got to see a tester. The BMW badges front and rear were blacked out and there was a large black stripe down the side of it.
@Papercutninja: Seriously -- always send that shit in, man!
Catch a glimpse of it in the wild before it goes extinct.
Oh good, finally a car for Aztek owners looking to trade up.
looking good. im just over the border in NC but i'll be in upstate looking.
As an X5 owner this might be a good next choice.
It's growing on me, it looks pretty fly, man!
...aahhhhhh !!!!!!!!!
I don't want it on my body!
Do you understand me?
I don't want it on my body!
@OrangeBoss9: Maybe closer to the AMC Eagle owner.
@Ray Wert:
I could've had a scoop on Jalopnik! That's my new current life's goal. Seeing a MFG tester car being the one just scratched off the list.
Also the X6 is a beautiful machine. I was skeptical about it when i saw the initial reports, but in person it is perfectly proportioned. It looks like BMW might be starting to come back, design-wise, with this latest crop.
I guess the one I saw two weeks ago in Munich airport doesn't count as wild (or maybe even production?). I figured it was old news... who new! There was a fair amount of whiplash from the Teutonic punters at the airport.
@Papercutninja: Whatever you're smoking over there, I want some. I saw it at the Detroit show and in my mind its even uglier in the metal. Also the interior is borrowed wholesale from the X5, down to the laughingly phallic shifter-by-wire.

I'm really starting to like the look of this as well. I think I'll get that lift kit and 20" wheels and truck tires for my M3, afterall.
@OrangeBoss9: Nice. I'm not sure where I stand on this, um, thing, yet but I like the Aztek reference. It's somewhat appropriate given the X6's straddling of SUV and sports sedan. Do we really need one vehicle that's all things to all people?
@piththeelder: HAWT!!
I always thought that the X6 was relatively good looking but I'm starting to think that you'd have to be a total prick to buy one. Just because it's so far outside of practical, yet seems to want people to think it is.
Good looking car. Now just give us the turbo diesel engine for it and you got a winner over any crossover on the market.
So are they gonna try to classify this as a light truck? Is that the idea?
Sports Activity Coupe is the stupidest name I've ever heard, ever. It's not even a coupe for crying out loud.
Bloated and fat looking on the outside. Small on the inside. High center of gravity like and SUV without any of the practicality. What a great combo.
Really quite silly looking. It has undoubtedly huge rims, but they still manage to look dreadfully undersized. Still, you can't deny BMW's got cojones to bring this to production, and black IS the best color I've seen it in so far.
Glad they didn't call it a Sport Utility Coupe, since it would then SUC.
I said this car was hot in September!

Still odd looking, coming from a non BMW fan. Kind of Ford Escort-ish combined with AMC Eagle.
Nice. I've liked this from the outset. I'm not into this business of trying to fill every niche, but I figure that if the manufacturers stop trying to pigeon-hole and name everything, it'll be fine. We'll just have lots of unusual cars on the road. Simple as that.
Please don't pay any attention to this piece of crud, you'll just encourage them.
Yet another Infiniti FX wannabe... yawn...
I'm generally not a Crossover/SUV/SAV/MPV whatever fan, but i think this one was doen up really well. It looks fresh and new. Completely different than anything else BMW offers. It looks leaps and bounds better than the X3/X5. I think it's the second best looking BMW on the market. The best looking being the 1-series Coupe.
Look at that f---ing rear tray, I just want to put it in my lap, flip on the andy griffith show and eat a microwave dinner off it. Yuck!
Sport-Utility Vehicle = SUV
Sports Activity Coupe = SAC
I likes me some BMW action from time to time, but this is in no way sporty nor a coupe (look, there's FOUR doors). It's something new and probably cool to someone out there.
However, it'll always be a SAC to me. ;-)
The rake of the rear glass is so steep but they still had to work that Hoffmeister kink in there, and that triangle formed between the side window and rear glass is a little off, I think.
this car will kill a billion kids just reversing out of the driveway
after seeing it at NAIAS this past weekend, it's not bad. but i've always been a fan of these types of vehicles, and would be much more a fan if it was a two door. *reminisces about the audi steppenwolf concept, as a tear rolls down his cheek*
i will say this, though: the rear headroom on that thing...is not good. i'm 5'10", and when i got in the back seat of that thing...it was claustrophobic at best. a friend who was with me (who is over 6 ft tall), attempted to sit in there, then said "uh, huh...this is not going to work."
