Call it a nod to the power of an Internet leak, or a calculated buzz builder. Either way, BMW let fly with information on the next offshoot of its latest M3, after photos of the convertible showed up on forum sites earlier this week. According to the press text, the retractable hardtop switchgear adds 450 pounds to the platform. That'll likely put a bit of crimp in the car's performance figures, vis-à-vis its coupe sibling, which has a flyweight carbon-fiber roof. On the occasion of the convertible's live reveal in March at the Geneva motor show, BMW's also introducing its new M DCT dual-clutch transmission. That box replaces the SMG, a complex and often unwieldy cog swapper apparently created by Stephen Hawking to celebrate the triumph of spacetime over Euclidean space. (It's complicated, see). No details on the M DCT in the press release — and ditto for performance figures - so we'll have to wait for another missive.

Oh yeah, I remember BMW. They're the company that used to build the M3 and M5. Who bought the rights to their name?
Behold BMW's advanced technological prowess on display; they now weigh more than a mid nineties Sedan Deville.
Ahh, the newest iteration of the ultimate douchebagwagen. Babelfish won't translate it.
I like the M3, I'm just ho-hum about any convertible that gets its own launch. A heavier, more expensive, less pracical version of the original that absolutely screams "midlife crisis" or "uppity tool from NJ attending Duke"
@poxpopulus: No kidding, the Caddy looks better too.
What a great motor and transmission. So... uh, when are we going to see one in a Seven? Al, go buy one off that capsized ship!
Whaaa...somebody produced a hardtop, convertible, 6 speed, 420hp V8 coupe that handles and its heavy....whaaaa.
Were any of you alive during the malaise era?
Well, even if you buy your cars by the pound, which I have calculated on occasion, this is a bad deal, given how much it costs.
I'm also finding "head thorax air bags" a little TMI and clinical, thanks.
But I tried to read through the whole description and kept thinking of the French expression "You're trying to fart higher than your ass****" It reads like a menu at an overpriced joint where a burger becomes a "delicate blend of prime beef and spices blended together (hamburger and pepper) and cooked to perfection (well done so we don't poison you) and garnished with seasonal greens (onion).
BMWNA should s-can this thing and bring over an M3 wagon. Hell, bring over the 335 wagon or 135 5door hatch and I'm all in.
@BuddyHinton:
There's more room in the back seats of this thing than the 135.
But, I take your point.
"Hey, BMW. Step outside and have a word with yourself."
Okay, I know they're good cars, and they're sporty, and convertibles are fun and all...but does it have to look like a loaf of white bread?
And when the top is up, pre-sliced bread. With vents.
*sigh* Another soul-less BMW. I don't care if it has enough power to fly. It's Bangled. There hasn't been a good looking BMW since the E46, the new 6 series is an accidental exception, but out of the price range for many.
@BuddyHinton:
Yes. And bring the diesels into more than just the X5 and 3-series (right away). My beef with BMW has more to do with weird and inconsistent product offerings. "Okay, we'll have coupes and convertibles of these models, but just one version of each of the rest."
I blame America's rapidly aging, fattening, and balding populace.
Here's a question we should all ask ourselves: Do we really dislike this M3 convertible? Or do we just dislike the pricetag? For everything BMW.
No mention of the 6 series 'verts UV reflective leather? IMO that is something to brag about in a leather-clad drop-top.
Maybe its standard on the lesser 3 series 'verts so they didnt reiterate.
@SAMMYG007: The price tag certainly is outrageous. But if you're going to build a serious machine, don't make it into a convertible, as you are compromising handling, rigidity, safety and not to mention the added weight and cost.
I'm not hating on BMWs. I'm a bleeding heart fan. I'm still holding out hope that Bangle would be fired and BMW will one day regain its true heritage. BMW has lost its soul and character and they've become slaves to the luxury car scene, where cupholders hhold a higher priority than the suspension geometry.
@sammyg007: I'm pretty sure I just hate the car. Good plug though.
I just want the engine in an early E36. Is that so hard to ask?
I can't believe I'm the first one to officially say this, but this car represents everything that is wrong with BMW today.
And it's only going to get worse. Take the X6 for example...
OK a white convertible with tan interior. Hmmmm... what do they expect - 80 percent of the market for this car to be women?
Gimme an anthracite / carbon / silver touring model with understated interior (grey leather?) and I'd be happy. Probably reflects the sentiment of most of the (mostly male) posters here as well.
