It looks like BMW is going to offer its first hybrid powertrain in the new X6 Sport Activity Vehicle. It's likely that sales of the X6 hybrid will begin in 2009. The new X-Drive system should come in handy distributing the massive torque the electric motors are sure to develop to whichever wheel has the most grip. [Via eGM CarTech]

Maybe the X-6 will be called an XUV because is Xtreme to the maXX. Just like the rest of my generation.
That roofline looks okay, but doesn't it render the back seat useless to anyone bigger than an Oompa-Loompa?
@Mike the Dog:
Considering the likelihood of anyone ever actually sitting in the backseat is nil, I'm not sure it'll be much of a problem.
This is going to be another 'Woman and her Purse' vehicle.

Analyze that...
BMyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwn.
A four door looking coupe with jacked up baja look...ummm easy pass this thing is fugly.
i think it actually might look better in hybrid form. shocker.
Ok here goes. This is the fucking ugliest BMW since the bubble car and at least it was cute. After they loose their ass on this maybe they will stick with fugly overpriced, but great driving cars...
In keeping with the X6 motif, the hybrid drive system will decrease both fuel economy and performance but provide class leading ego stroking.
@Galaxie500: Disagree. Nothing is uglier than the original E65 7-Series in all its bangle-butted glory. I wouldn't buy an X6 but then again I wouldn't buy any SUV period.
Proportionally, the X6 is fantastic. It looks like the spiritual successor to the Eagle hatchback except perhaps the BMW won't fall apart quite as quickly.
I just wish that BMW would give up on calling a 5-door vehicle a "coupe". This is a tall 5-door wagon, vastly superior to the typical bloated 4x4 box for soccer moms, with the special BMW price tag.
But Bangle was still involved, and that's why the X6 will be quickly forgotten. I assume that all the odd styling details can be fixed ... or simply buy an Audi Allroad.
