Looks like a tooth hygiene prop. I so don't care about faux camp remakes of crappy originals.

It does look kind of unfinished, maybe they assumed that everybody would be trippin on some kind of hallucinogenics before going to the show which in turn would make the mach 5 look exactly like it will in the movie.

The one thing that bothers me most are the tires I just expected them to be fatter and taller not those super thin modern rubber bands.

@TheAstronot: Yeah, I mean if you watch the show (which my dad has on DVD) he goes all over the place in terms of terrain. He's on mountains, race tracks, through forests, under water, on dirt roads, etc. The races end up being closer to rallies than to straight road racing.

Also, I see the trunk in the movie stills, but not in the model at the auto show - what's with that? Where will Spritle and Chimchim go?

I seem to recall reading about someone making a Mach 5 as seen in the Anime about 5 to 10 years ago as a way to raise money for charity or something. ( Wizaed magazine) what happened to that?

Like @THEASTRONOT wrote, it surely is just a rough recast of the previously shown 1:1-car.
The gills behind the frontwheels are missing, too, as are the doorhandles.

they should reshoot the whole movie with the Mazda Furai instead... LOL.

SPUDZILL, Maybe you read that issue of Wizard magazine 5-10 years ago but Speed Racer is an anime from the 60s.

And why would they use a Mazda Furai TWEEZY if that's not what the Mach 5 looks like. The one in these pics is exactly what it looks for, heck even Speed is wearing the same outfit and has same hair style in that pic with him and Racer X.

This one at the Detroit auto show is not the one used in the films, I think it's just a replica with a cheap body kit for showing off what the car looks like, they got the right idea, just missing a few things from the one in the film.

Anyways, it's a great thing that this movie, being the first big budget anime adaptation for the big screen, is not caving in to please the dumbed down audiences here in America that are unfamiliar with the series. Being a huge fan since I was a kid, this is the only way it could've looked, and it's even very colorful just like an anime..

I don't expect people to like this mvoie, and I expect a lot of stupid comments about why does it seem retro, or stuff like that. I think it will be a fun movie, especially for those who know of this anime that is actually older than me and people who come online criticize it without knowing what the heck speed racer is..

All I have to say is, you might think of the anime or even this movie as stupid, and if that's your reaction from looking at the trailers, then just don't go. I don't need to go on the internet to read about how it was a stupid idea to make Racer X the brother and whatever else this current generation doesn't know about.

@boombye: Hey, I was only joking. I understand that the cartoon was over the top. I used to wake up every morning at 6am to watch Speed when I was a kid, because that's when it used to come on. I'm familiar with the source material, so I understand that the movie will be over the top as well.

I, for one, am excited about the upcoming film is coming out... but I also understand that there's about a 50/50 chance that it will suck. And there will be no grey area. Either it will be an amazingly good film or a horribly bad one, but we'll have to wait for it to know.

It's just a Mock-up! The real one looks far different. Just compare with the one on the press-conference. Maybe they just killed the first one while shooting...
