Follow the logic here. The intrepid reporters over at AutoWeek are reporting that Ford is developing a new RWD platform for Lincoln and Ford. Derrick Kuzak, head of Ford global product, confirmed that modern RWD cars were in the picture, saying "Yes, we're working on a rear-wheel-drive plan for the enterprise." With the Detroit Auto Show coming around we can't help remember one RWD from Ford we were quite fond of it. Dear sweet loving God... please make it an Interceptor.
Of course, it's no shock that there's development of such a platform going on in Australia, where RWD V8 cars aren't an oddity. But it's now looking like the production of said vehicles, if that's where they're sourced from, wouldn't be limited to Australia. Someone pinch us. Or give us a Fiesta ST. [AutoWeek]

INTERCEPTOR!
That car is so Dave, they'll have to create a Goliath concept just for this thing to crush.
I really want to see the Interceptor concept make production.
The Ford brand will also remain obsolete.
Nice! Now build the damn thing!
Cowards.
I hope they don't make it a live rear axle thing like the Mustang. Maybe the now defunct LS platform (DEW98?) can be made cheaper?
This plus DB4 Zagato in the garage and i'll never ask for another thing again.
And, what niche would such a car carve? Or cannibalize?
A rear wheel drive platform for the Enterprise; I guess dilithium crystal power will follow.
Someone already makes the Interceptor, it's called the Chrysler 300C.
Maybe they've been taking notes from the Hyundai design teams styling formula. It's quite simple; you take a picture of the opposition's car, trace over it onto a clean sheet of paper and then add in your own company's logo to various places on the exterior. Easy as pie!
@Torqahontas: Preach it, brother!
The main reason they want a RWD Platform??? The Police Business!
Mulally said he was disappointed when he heard the interceptor would not be built. He should enact his veto powers and tell them to build it!
No, no...read it again...
Kuzak: "Yes, we're working on a rear-wheel-drive plan for Enterprise."
Ford's getting back into fleet sales.
Great! There's even time to bring this to market while GM waivers about their rwd drive vehicles! First good (potential) decision I've heard coming out of Dearborn in a while.
@J6R, of course its going to have a live rear axle.
Making it for Ford and Lincoln. Not Mercury. WRITING ON THE WALLS, FOLKS.
Knight Rider:- The next next generation
@Jeb_Hoge: I agree, but if they want all they need to do is put leather seats in it, change the badge and paint it "Champagne" wha-la, you got yourself a Merc!
father of Knight Rider, season two
Yes, please.
Yes, I would definitely want the Police package. Every little thing it does is magic.
@TheMadAdder: voila?
@philibuster: thank you phil, I do realize that my spelling can at times be atrocious.
Just as I wrote about how I was unsure about Ford's direction, they come up with this excellent decision. Nice work, ol' boys.
@TheMadAdder: Sorry, I also realize that I can be an ass.
While I still think Ford should swipe the XJ (and even the XF) platform while it still can, and build something, I don't know, not sucky, with it, the Aussie RWD platforms will suffice thanks.
Build me a damn Interceptor. I need a big RWD beast with capacious trunk space to make my girlfriend STFU about wanting me to buy a sport-ute. And there are 5 300s on my block alone, not buying one of those.
SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE IN FORD WILL FIND A WAY TO MAKE THIS STALLION INTO A GELDING. LOOK WHAT HAPPEN TO THE MERCURY MAURADER.
SWEET.
I knew someone was listening.
Interceptor, MKR and...Cyclone? Eliminator? Cougar?
Cmon, lets have it.
@j6r: I hope they do make it a live axle like the Mustang.
I want. Turbodiesel. Flat hood though. Tinted windows. Xoom...
SMART PLAY BY YE OLDE FORDE
Forget the Interceptor. Remember that Continental concept they had a few years ago based on the 1960 model. Bring that back.
@Chris Rowe: Word.
It was hot in an understated way. What do you think the chances of THAT happening are?
It's a pity it doesn't look more like an XB Falcon (but in a non-retro way). Still, this is good news.
I can see RoboCop driving this.
@dezeinstein: Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
They are already messing up Knightrider, don't give them any ideas!
Where is the Waterfall grilled version for old farts????
Does this mean Mercury is going to be killed (again)?
@Chris Rowe: Amen, brotha, preach on. I had forgotten about that. That thing was very classy.
I was looking into this yesterday hoping Ford would be smart enough to build this and the Lincoln MKR! I was disappointed when I didn't find any news about. Now, I am kind of hopeful again.
Incidentally, Yes please. In England, ta very much
(Not bothered about the rest of Europe, we want to ne able to feel smug about something for a change)
Newsflash: Engineers at Oldsmobile and Plymouth are hot on Ford's tail!
The race is on...
Ford missed out with not going forward with the 427.
[www.ultimatecarpage.com]
I saw that car in person at a show and my pants got tight!
The 427 is/was a 300 eater!
@frank_rizzo: Seconded. I'd take a 427 over an Interceptor any day.
But I'd also take a real car over a concept. Get crackin', FoMoCo.
How long, dear Lord, are we gonna get the tease though? When are they gonna make these things, and not just CONCEPT us to death?
How in the name of Dave has the word "Ranchero" not come up yet?!
I never cared for the 427 that much. To me the front and back always seemed to clash for some reason. I love the front on the Fusion and I love the similar look of the 427 on the Interceptor concept.
By the way anyone else share my thoughts if Ford were ever to make an Interceptor/MKR version for Mercury they should slap a cougar badge on it? I think it would sell.
Dang that Interceptor looks nice. (Searches web for MKR photos...ah, looking good as well).
They should build this car ASAP. Drop interceptor name and call it Galaxie, or Thunderbolt. Maybe not thunderbolt. I don't care if Chrysler makes a car similar in design. Why should they not make it? Is it againt the rules for 2 companies to build manly looking cars? It should come with twin turbo V6 3.5L and varient of 4.6 V8. And top of the line GT500 motor in SVT trim. Thats bold moves.
Then they should use this platform to build some sweet Lincolns. Bring down the median buyers age from 63 or whatever it is.
