The illustrator's over at Winding Road have been having fun with a possible future RX-9 based on previous concepts such as the Mazda Nagare. Their guesstimation picks up some of the Nagare aft of the A-pillar, with a modernization of lines from the current generation RX-8 and last generation RX-7 in the rear. As for under the hood, guesses range from a modified Renesis to something as out-of-character as a V8. But before you rotorheads get up in arms, remember this is all just educated dart throwing. Infinity called...it wants its greenhouse back.
I just hope it's bitchin' so I can race it in LeMons in 20 years.
Sandy Wong© called... he wants to hump your Renassis.
Actually, that looks a lot like an Infiniti just in general.
I think they should ditch those wheel arches, though. Everyone is doing them now, so why bother?
It does look pretty hot, but it looks more like a concept than something that would realistically be put into production.
You had me at "last generation RX7 in the rear."
Technically, if it is the RX-9, it'd have to have rotary. O/W, they'd have to call it a PX-9 or something.
Looks more like the Kabura concept
What's with the aspect ratio difficulties on posting Youtube videos? That RS-sicks video would be so much better if we could see if that body is still as sexy without being all stretched horizontally.
The designer ripped most of it from the Vantage, they even say it in the article. read.
I just hope they put that 450HP three rotor in it.
@Turboner: Youtube does not letter-box videos that aren't in the 4:3 aspect ratio, like your typical TV uses.
The video editer has to export it with letter boxes, otherwise youtube stretches it to fit. Myspace was smart, and set it up to adjust for different aspect ratios though.
i like the other mazda thing better...
@Dr.Danger: Dammit. Ya beat me to it.
It really, really does look like the Hyundai version of the DB9, though.
I want a three rotor RX-whatever. I owned an RX-8 for 18 months and eventually sold it because I couldn't take the lack of power anymore and the aftermarket had no acceptable answers. Other than that it was a great car.
@CBR2200: I wish you'd offered your RX8 up as a mule to Grannie's or Hinson supercars so they they could build LSx to RX8 conversion kits. I love the RX8 but hate the fuel mileage.. and lack of torque.
Of course if you want a 3-rotor.. you are probably cringing at my suggestion to pull the wankel for a chevy V8. Sorry - no offense intended.
Lousy photoshop - didn't even bother with the brakes!
There are so many people (myself included) who would seriously consider buying an RX-8 if only it didn't get sucky gas mileage and burn oil. Replace the rotary with a high-strung V6 and keep the agility of the current car, and the replacement for the RX-8 will be a winner.
Yeah, rotaries don't have great fuel economy and burn oil. So what. Who cares when the engine screams to 11k rpm and weights less than 200lbs? They need to stop pussyfooting around with the fuel economy/burn oil whiners make a real no-compromise rotary that just does what rotaries do best - high revving turbo horsepower. I'll take the top end model with a 3 rotor and single variable geometry blower a la 997 Turbo. The real downfall of the old RX-7 wasn't the rotary anyway, but the needlessly complicated sequential twin turbo. Not very reliable, and partially defeats the purpose of a rotary by adding so much weight to the nose. Modern turbo tech solves these problems.
Looks pretty terrible to me. My guess is that it's going to be more like a cross between a Miata on steroids and a coupe version of the new Mazda 6. That thing looked more like a design student's project that only got a C+. Maybe it will be a Hot Wheels.
I think it looks great. I'm willing to deal with crappy gas mileage and it burning oil if they drop the price significantly, but that's not going to happen.
@tentacles: The redesigned Renesis engine toned down the oil burning and improved fuel economy.
It's a mess, but a hot mess.
if they make that car, and it has a back seat large enough for my 2 year-old son, I'm down. I know the whole back seat thing is a huge bummer, but that's life. I think that car is great looking, especially when compared with current offerings.
@djdare:
Isn't that an RX-8, then?
@Dr.Danger:
Good to know, but I'll believe it when actual numbers are in, preferably from owners.
Fact is; it was the renesis itself that kept me from buying an RX-8, and going with a cooper S.
Lousy fuel economy + Oil burning + buzzy = no sale.
@tentacles: Agreed, "burning oil?" You complain about that and you are not a car guy.
You could always get a tesla!
that article was so crap.
and again it's
"illustrators"
not
"illustrator's"
grade school stuff, so maybe it was just a typo but it's starting to become the norm among the illiterate sheeple (some of which are regular lurkers no doubt) and I think it would be a good idea to keep that sort of thing in check.

As concerns the object in question, a piston engine would not be in the spirit of things, and the winding road's (possessive!) concept is some sort of affront.
@TexanIdiot25: Thanks, I'll remember that when my wife and I finish our first movie.
Impressive. Now if we could only devise a way to keep Ford out of Mazda's parts bin, boardroom, and design studio, we could have a real winner.
@tentacles: the variable geometry turbo is not a new thing, it was bolted to an old Shelby Dodge.
Mazda will lose the Rx-8's stronghold on the dyke market if they mess it up.
Inspired by Optimus Prime's lips...
How about we make a 2 stroke and burn MORE oil? 11,000 oil burning RPM would be a wonderous sound.
Brrrrrring-a-dingdingdingding baby.
