Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies have reportedly conducted a competition to see which could impound the most vehicles in one day. The Associated Press reports that the contest was organized to increase morale and motivation within the department. "Operation Any Booking" also included competitions for questioning the highest number of gang members and making the most arrests. "It's just a friendly competition to have a little fun out here," one of the department's lieutenants is quoted by AP as saying.
Bragging rights were the only prize, but independent police monitoring agencies are still finding issue with "Any Booking." As quoted by AP, Public Defender Michael P. Judge said, "Certainly, it calls into question whether there was a legitimate reason to book any of the people who were booked during the time of the competition." The AP also reports that the number of vehicle impounds "spiked" during the competition.
