As you may have noticed when we told you about the North American debut of the Alfa Romeo Bertone B.A.T. 11, we started off the day yesterday at the 2008 Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance press breakfast. Actually, it was more of a press "stand-around-and-sweat". August 3rd will mark the 30th Concours held on the Meadow Brook Estate in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and they're planning on mixing things up a bit this year. Remember the '62 New Yorker we saw nearly a year ago? We all liked its evil-beater look, but these cars looked pretty good when nice and shiny, too. It was quite a find when I spotted this '62 in the island's East End, parked in the exact spot in which the 1971 Chevy Blazer normally parks. I see the Chrysler parked there every once in a while, never at the same time as the Blazer, so I suspect they're owned by the same person. More »

Patrons at a Bellingham, Washington Starbucks got quite the surprise yesterday when a 2008 Chrysler 300 driven by an elderly man crashed through the floor to ceiling window and across the shop. Five people were injured in the incident, though none seriously, and the driver is facing a charge of second degree negligent driving. Fortunately for us, a table was embedded in the grille and it makes it look like the 300 is sticking it's tongue out. The 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's already shown a penchant for descent down the slippery sales ladder of incentives without saying they're incentives. Hell, maybe they're just lying to themselves. Whether they're telling the truth or just truthiness, the Detroit News is reporting today the chieftains in the sales and marketing team run by Joe "Direct Mail" Eberhardt have instituted a plan where they're giving dealers anywhere from $2,500 (on the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300) to $7,000 (on the Dodge Ram and Durango) for 2006 models. Why the need? Well, even though the kids in Auburn Hills have cut inventories from the highs of 647,000 vehicles in July to 499,000 reported yesterday for November, '06 models still account for 32% of current inventory. Best line of the entire campaign's got to be "Oh, thank you Chrysler!" and the running "smooth, good flavor" gag running through them all. Among Chrysler's SEMA show cars this year will be a rocked-out version of the 300C Long Wheelbase it's calling the Pullman. Recalling the Pullmann Mercedes W100s of the 1960s, a favorite of Hugh Hefner and South American puppet dictators alike, the Pullman features rear suicide doors, two sunroofs, chrome dubba-dubs, a Hotchkiss Sportline suspension and mild performance tweakage. It's derived with an eye toward calling attention to Chrysler's often overlooked 300C Long Wheelbase, which it showed off at the New York show earlier this year. Although specialty builder and supplier ASC Incorporated unveiled its Helios concept, a lattice-structured ragtop based on a 300C four-door sedan, at the Detroit show last year, word on the street is the German-American hybrid's rejected the ASC design due to cost considerations and feasability studies. Instead, Motor Trend is reporting the 'merican side of the cross-Atlantic merger of equals has contracted with another cross-Atlantic merger of equals, the Austrian/Canadian killer combo of Magna-Steyr to build a Karmann-style retractable folding steel roof for the next design iteration of the big gangsta sedan. Chrysler's We're Still Part American campaign continues, with the release of a limited-production option package for the 300 it's calling the "Great American Package" (not to be confused with a Ron Jeremy movie potentially of the same name). The package is built around the 2.7-liter V6 model, and the options list reads like a fradycat's cheat sheet, including four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, stability control with brake assist, front and side curtain air bags, and air filtration. With the base six, It also gets decent mileage, keeping buyers safe from refinery shortages. We'd be inclined to rename it the "Sum of all Fears" edition. Chrysler suspended production of its all-wheel-drive LX cars at its Brampton, ON plant back in June, due to a low-speed vibration in the transfer case. Magna Drivetrain, the transfer case's supplier, has done some fiddling and futzing with the box, and apparently the shaking's stopped. DCX hasn't released numbers on the affected Magnum and 300 models, but the problem was obviously serious enough to shut down the AWD line for two months, which makes us think there were quite a few unhappy customers.
