Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes PeakMike Spinelli7/11/07 11:30amFiled to: It Was 20 Years Ago TodayS1Audipikes peak10EditPromoteShare to KinjaToggle Conversation toolsGo to permalinkA few weeks back you all voted Audi's 600 hp, 1,000 kilo hoonatic racing monster, the Sport quattro S1, into our rapidly expanding Fantasy Garage as the king of all Group B rally cars. While we weren't 100% behind the results (Peugeot cough, 205 T16 cough), we're not actually against it in any way, either. And as serendipity would have it, today marks the 20-year anniversary of Walter Röhrl's record setting romp up to the top of Pike's Peak. One of the aspects that is so amazing about his run (besides getting his tires over the edge above mile-deep sheer drops) is that two years prior, Michèle Mouton had won the hill climb in an Audi. The next year, Bobby Unser won again in another Audi and did so while setting the course record with a run of 11:09:22 minutes. On July 11, 1987, Walter Röhrl again piloted an Audi quattro to victory up Pike's Peak, and again set a course record. This time of 10:47:85 shattered Unser's year-old record by nearly 22 seconds and beat the second place Peugeot T16 by almost 7. Perhaps you Jalops are smarter than you look.
