Lessons Learned: Big Hoonage at What Price?

I can drive fast, and I like to. But increasingly, I'm seeing the wisdom of Captain Slow. Christian motoring and whatnot. Farago's got a piece up over at TTAC about the day he quit street racing. I was once in a single-car pileup that was entirely due to driver error at a reasonable speed for the road (I was the passenger). That didn't stop me from wanting to motor at consistently high speeds. Buying an SUV did. It's ridiculous the way people drive entirely inappropriate vehicles, very, very fast, and we share the road with them. So here's the question, commenters, what's your take on high-speed driving on public roads? And if your mind has changed over the years, why?
