It may not be the spiritual successor to the CRX HF, but the Honda Civic HFP Concept is the result of Honda Access America — the in-house accessory division — taking a Civic Si and adding lightness. Both exhaust and wheels have been replaced with high-performance ultra-lightweight versions, while an aero body kit streamlines the cD for a slipperier shape. So how much more efficient is the HFP? Standing out among the carbon fiber and large wheels at SEMA was the debut of the Ronn Motors Scorpion hydrogen-powered supercar. Built in Texas, this hydrogen vehicle isn't a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity to power an electric motor. Instead, the Scorpion features a modified 3.5-liter Acura V6 that has hydrogen injected into it. Where does the hydrogen come from? Using a process similar to electrolysis, water is zapped with electricity in order to create a hydrogen gas that is then pumped into the engine. When the hydrogen is added to the V6, the claim is that the car will achieve 20-40% better fuel economy with lower emissions. More »

In an attempt to expand the appeal of the 2009 Dodge Challenger to every corner of the automotive enthusiast world, Chrysler has unveiled the Mopar Drift Dodge Challenger that will be piloted by Samuel Hübinette during the 2009 Formula Drift season. In order to prep the car for FD, the Challenger dropped a significant amount of weight with the use of carbon fiber everywhere and received a bit more safety equipment than your average SRT8. Under the hood is a custom-built Mopar A8 aluminum engine that should pump out 850 horsepower and 849 lb-ft of torque. You see some rare, one-of-a-kind ABS plastic carbon fiber sheetmetal on the SEMA show floor, but nothing is less common in Vegas this time of year than a completely stock example of one of the hottest cars on the planet. That's right: Nissan elected to bring a bone-stock GT-R to SEMA, almost as a challenge to the customizers on-site. "Blank canvas, boys. Whatcha gonna do now?" it taunts, no doubt causing the creative wheels to turn even faster than when confronted with someone else's interpretation of the car. Well played, Nissan. Well played. Much like the falling leaves represented on the Tetsu GTR's matte black hood, we've been awaiting the SEMA arrival of the Japanese tuner's latest Bentley concoction. Are we fans of the odd paint scheme, Bucky Beaver front grille and Scoobtastic rear spoiler? Not so much. Are we fans of the 800 HP under that leafy hood? You betcha! All in all, the Tetsu GTR is a fate unworthy of just about any Bentley...except for the Bentley Continental GT, which makes it both horrifying and appropriate. Not unlike the SEMA show itself. More »

At 7’4” tall, 18’1” long and 8’2” wide, the KNIGHT XV is one big honkin’ bio-fuel powered SUV. Did we mention it was armored too? Thanks to a 6.8 liter V10 that runs on something nebulously called “Biofuel” it claims to be green, but we estimate its mileage to be in the low single digits. That’s a lot of liquid corn. Working with Ford and Funkmaster Flex (no relation), Grammy-winner Nelly laid out a design for his own custom Ford Flex crossover; the finished result will be revealed to the artist today at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Apparently Nelly was enthusiastic about the Flex from his first look, saying "Yo, that’s hot! How can I get one of those?" Never one to miss a PR opportunity, Ford offered to customize a Flex for the "premiere stuntastic stuntman" under the watchful eye of Funkmaster, himself a custom Flex owner. These photos show details of the new 500+ HP 2009 Hurst/Hemi Challenger that’s scheduled for an official unveiling at SEMA tomorrow. Expected to be available from a range of dealers early in 2009, Hurst is offering a variety of upgraded components for the 2009 Dodge Challenger, all of which appear to be fitted to this vehicle; that means the de rigeur Hurst shifter, white paint with gold stripes, branded wheels and a variety of motor upgrades which culminate in the 500+ HP figure, but can be optioned lower for smaller budgets. We got a peek at the Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe concept at the New York Auto Show, but with the death of the Kappa platform basically a done deal we didn't think we'd see much more of it. UK-based LSE Design is planning to debut their Range Rover Sport Coupe at next week's SEMA show in Vegas. For only a quarter-million dollars, you too can get your very own Range Rover sans the two plebe doors tacked onto the back. Of course, the LSE Coupe is also outfitted with the typical Range Rover tuner mods — huge wheels, low-profile tires and forced induction. Subaru is bringing what they're calling the "Mountain Rescue Forester" to next week's SEMA show. Built in conjunction with Detroit-based Specialized Vehicles, the Ski Patrol vehicle started life as a Forester 2.5XT turbo, but now sports 14 inches of ground clearance from an air suspension system and fat Yokohamas. The requisite high-power off-road lighting sits up top, complemented by ski holders, a cargo basket and a WARN winch on the front bumper for pulling EXTREME!! inexperienced snowboarders up from icy ledges. Tuner Neil Tjin, already expected to display his work at SEMA next week with a custom Pontiac G8 CST, will also be bringing a surprise 2009 Honda Fit to the Vegas event. Details are still under wraps, but the Fit obviously receives Tjin's trademark baby blue paint, along with aftermarket alloys wearing low-profile rubber. We thought Tjin's G8 looked pretty sharp, but we're not so sure about this one; the black wheels make the already too-small wheelwells on the Fit look even tinier, and the whole thing has sort of a hopped-up Prius vibe to it. Ford has four special editions of its brand-new 2009 F-150 they're bringing out to Vegas for the 2008 SEMA show. First and foremost, the DeWalt Contractor Concept tacks on the expected exterior off-road upgrades but also adds thoughtful touches like a tool charger in the center console, storage under the rear seat and Ford's tool tracking system to make sure your chop saw doesn't walk away. The Ford Hi-Pa Drive F-150 takes hybrids to the next level with in-wheel electric motors, while X-Treme Toyz and Street Scene Equipment will also each be customizing the new F-series to their own unique clients' tastes. Tuning house GGI is preparing a Sportec Porsche they'll drop at SEMA next week in Vegas. Aside from the important bits — namely a Stage 3 turbo setup with 600 HP and 564 ft-lbs of twist — the custom 997 is going to get slathered with Christian Audigier "Ed Hardy" graphics. That's right, it's a Porsche dressed up to look like Brit Brit's cell phone holster! Yay. Lexus is bringing a fleet of vehicles to the SEMA show next week, including an IS 350 as close to an F as possible without being a Lexus IS F. Just in case you prefer the IS F, the company handed four of them over to various tuners and magazines, including one to our friends at 0-60 mag, to do up for the Vegas extravaganza. In addition to the quintet of IS models, they're also bringing an ICON-tuned Lexus LX 570 SUV for that plastic surgeon with Botox money burning a hole in his or her pocket. The diesel performance gurus at Gale Banks Engineering are getting on the teaser bandwagon with this tail-shot of their new 200 MPH diesel dragster. Using a Duramax 6.6-liter mill not unlike Banks' S-10 oilburner — already capable of hitting 180 in the quarter — the company promises output well over 1000 HP and 1000 lb-ft of torque. According to the release, "there'll be 30 feet more of this wild machine on site at SEMA" next week, so keep an eye out for some diesel dragster goodness during our complete coverage of the world's biggest aftermarket show. PML and Ford have been palling around for a while now, most recently to develop the Volvo Recharge C30 concept. Now they've gone in on an in-wheel electric drive plug-in hybrid Ford F-150 concept coming to SEMA. The in-wheel motors are a clever brushed pancake design that act as a part of the wheel and not just another add-in part. We've often thought hybrid tech would be best developed in the pickup market, where high torque matters and light weight and great driving dynamics don't. The new Jeep Wrangler is a damn fine off-road vehicle straight from the factory, but a 202 HP V6 just doesn't quite fit the bill for the folks at American Expedition Vehicles. Remember, this is the same group of guys who built the Hemi-powered SR-392 Roadster and the amazing Brute conversion kit that'll let you turn your Wrangler into an honest-to-goodness Jeep truck. This year at SEMA AEV'll be showing their latest and greatest new toy — the custom shop's dropped a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 into the evergreen off-roader...and then tosses us the keys for an exclusive first drive. Chevy has released a single teaser-style image of their 2008 SEMA show-bound Camaro Black, described only as "a dark and mysterious interpreta." We're pretty sure they meant "interpretation" but ran into character limitations in their imaging software. Regardless, the Camaro Black show car actually looks to be a gunmetal gray based on the photo and appears decked out with a sinister-looking body kit and the requisite SEMA monster alloy wheels shod in low-profile rubber. The red glow from the headlights may also indicate some sort of LED illumination kit, but what you see is all we know at this point; we'll either get a constant dribble of teasers a-la 2010 Mustang or just bring you the goods from the Vegas show floor in two weeks. The Galpin Scythe started life as a Ford Mustang, but as you can see, it has since taken another road. The car made a private debut recently and will get a full-on public unveiling at SEMA, but it may cause a singularity in the space-SEMA continuum. See, the Scythe is the inevitable distillation of all SEMA show cars: It's got a 4.6-liter V8 stroked to 5.0 liters and twin-supercharged to over 1000 HP, 16-inch Wilwood brakes, 22 inch wheels up front and 24's at the back, and an insanity-fueled body with reverse scissor doors, taking inspiration from every Hot Wheels car and George Barris original ever made. RENNTech is known for tweaking Mercedes' best into fire-breathing bundles of badass, and they're preparing something interesting for this year's SEMA show. The RENNTech Mercedes-Benz GLK Rally Racer is said to be inspired by runners in the annual Pikes Peak climb and marks RENNTech's first foray into modding hybrids. We'll just have to see what that means as far as capabilities go when they drop details to match these teaser images. If we were forced to like a compact luxury SUV, the GLK would probably take the nod, so we're actually intrigued by what RENNTech is cooking up. More »

We've always liked the generation-straddling '61 and '62 Corvettes. They manage to strike a handsome balance between C1 flavor and C2 daring; no small feat considering a 'half-car refresh' would normally strike terror in heart of even the hardest auto enthusiast. Such opinions weigh heavily upon this split-window C1 Corvette being prepared for SEMA by the folks at Street Rods Only, a hot rod shop out of Decatur, IL. It seems they're taking a split-window fastback hard top they offer for sale and grafting it directly onto a replica 1961 Corvette, then dropped it all on a frame occupied by an LS crate motor. Sweet gods of motoring modification, is nothing holy? Hotchkis will be bringing a pair of heavily modified Dodge Challengers to this year's SEMA show in Vegas. We've no problem with the modded 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 they're towing to the show. No, our problem is with the other — a 1970 T/A 340 Six-Pack. We don't have much info on the new Challenger, but we do know the paint scheme will match the vintage one shown — which is not an original 340 Six Pack, thankfully. As proof the body kit isn't what's responsible for the "most hideous Nissan GT-R ever" from a few weeks ago, Zele has released pictures of their upcoming SEMA special carbon fiber GT-R aero kit, complete with brilliant orange paint. All the Zele pieces are individually available to add as much or as little of the upcoming Spec V look as you like, or you can get the whole package including orange paint, Rays forged alloys and an upgraded ECU sans-JDM speed limiter. Pricing for individual pieces runs from about $500 up to $1,100, while pricing for the entire upgrade package appears to still be in the works. More »

You remember that recent Dodge statement basically confirming there would not be a Dodge Challenger Convertible? Who cares if Dodge won't bring it, because it's just opening the doors for aftermarket converters like Coach Builders Ltd., bringing their interpretation of a drop-top Mopar pony to the SEMA show in Vegas next month. For the show, Coach Builders' Challenger gets 560 HP from a supercharger and other underhood mods, along with the requisite obnoxious wheels and what appears to be a Challenger T/A-inspired strobe stripe, though it comes off looking more like safety tape. Not content to let the Venza AS V do the talking, we've got another SEMA-bound modified not-Camry-wagon in the Toyota Venza SportLux by Street Image. The car picks up where the AS V left off, hitting all the "factory tuned" street performance styling cues like giant wheels, two-tone paint, a body kit including a hood scoop, a suede interior with accompanying accent lighting and enough audio equipment to run a small concert hall. At the nearly-here SEMA show this year, the number one super-best automaker from the land of the rising sun will be showing the Toyota Venza AS V by Five Axis as part of a larger strategy to convince us the car isn't a funny-looking Camry wagon. The Venza AS V is one of those active lifestyle concepts with extreme sports equipment carriers, big extreme tires and wheels, an extreme body kit and extreme brakes to bring it to an extremely short stop. We anticipate the Dodge Challenger will have a substantial showing at this years SEMA show, and if these two entries from Mr. Norm are any indication, its going to be a big horsepower show. The "Super Challenger" and "Super Cuda" are a pair of heavily modified Challengers sporting 900 HP from Kenne Bell supercharged V8s in addition to their snappy styling and big wheels. Considering the heft of the Challenger is one of its biggest problems, 900 HP seems a good starting point for upgrades. The production program for both won't start with 900 horses. Instead, they'll start at a base model, complemented by several stages with upscale performance and accessories. In addition, each of the parts and add-ons featured on the Mr. Norm's Super Challenger will be available to enthusiasts separately. So feel free to mix and match at your pleasure. PickupTrucks.com reports the forced-induction freaks at Turbonetics are taking a perfectly good 2009 Ford F-150 and bolting on a ceramic ball-bearing turbo for this year's SEMA show. The boost, channeled through a Spearco air-to-air intercooler in the front air dam, should be good for about 100 extra horsepower from the 320 HP 5.4-liter V8. Given that this is SEMA we're talking about, Turbonetics was also obliged to add a lowering kit, custom body and paint work, meaty wheels and tires, carbon fiber and suede interior bits and a mega-wattage Rockford Fosgate sound system. Hyundai is partnering with RKSport Incorporated to develop a high-performance Genesis sedan for the 2008 SEMA Show. The modifications list reads like the rap sheet on a Fast and Furious movie including TSW wheels, Baer brakes, K&N air filter, Eibach lowering springs and a Magnaflow exhaust system. Perhaps even more to the FNF point are the composite hood, spoiler, front and rear fascias, and side skirts. We're expecting the car to show with a tuned version of Hyundai's 375 HP V8, but we'll just have to wait to find out if it brings any actual upgrades along to Vegas. More »

The Land Cruiser devotees at ICON have been blessing us with SEMA eye-candy for a couple years now, and it looks like they'll be showing off two new projects in Vegas for 2008. First up is an FJ43 Cruiser done up with coil suspension, Recaro seats and beefed-up axles and transfer case, all motivated by a 450 HP GM LS V8 engine. Icon will also be showing a custom FJ45 Long Bed, basically a resto with mild customization to bring it into the 21st century mechanically. We love these old Cruisers, and ICON always does a great job respecting the original design while updating where necessary, so we're looking forward to seeing these rides in person in October. More »

The old-school shifter gurus at Hurst are back in the custom vehicle business, choosing the 2009 Dodge Challenger as their latest canvas. The Hurst/Hemi Challenger is scheduled to make its debut at the 2008 SEMA show in Vegas, after which it's expected in dealerships during the first part of next year. A Hurst shifter is included, of course, along with branded wheels, requisite gold stripes and "H" logos.
