Apparently no one before this weekend had ever driven more than 175.7 mph in London, except in PS2 (though one banker was reportedly clocked at 168 mph on foot following a stop for curry at Canary Wharf). It was a Mercedes McLaren SLR that set the record at London City Airport, outside the jurisdiction of traffic cameras, with Autocar editor-at-large Steve Sutcliffe at the wheel. The SLR beat nearest challengers the Ford GT, at 174mph, and the Corvette Z06, at 167mph. True, it was a publicity stunt to preceed the British Motor Show this week, but in the world of press-release regurgitation (guilty) any obscure bragging rights get column inches.
