They've been poised to do so for nearly a year, now team North American Eagle is nearly, almost, just about ready to make a pass at the world's land speed record. Recent test runs of the team's Lockheed F-104 Starfighter/land vehicle indicate the jet car could top 800 mph when it makes its record attempt later this year. The American-Canadian team hopes to unseat Brit Andy Green, who set the current record of 763 mph in the Thrust SSC in 1997, though word of it didn't reach us until 2002. (Sorry, no more sound-barrier jokes.)
