Mazda to Begin Leasing Hydrogen RX-8 in '06

No, it's not a rotary fuel cell, it's apparently a standard gas-fueled Renesis Wankel modified to accept direct hydrogen injection into the rotor housing, and Mazda's unleashing them on the Japanese public next year via a leasing program. We don't have any numbers on what the hydrogen does for the RX-8's admittedly atrocious fuel economy, and we don't know how many people are going to want a car they have to fill with hydrogen and gasoline. Still, sporty eco types, if you want a feel-good image car, this could be your ticket to the ball. [Thanks to Tim for the tip.]
