"WTF!? Those cars aren't Japanese," SEMA said under its breath, as Volkswagen unveiled its Passat, Jetta and Touareg R-GT tuners yesterday. As legend has it, VW holed up its project team in a California hotel room and wouldn't let them leave until they'd mastered the vagaries of the Japanese-American small-car scene. Then, they sent them over to Canada's HPA-Motorsports, which transformed their narrow-angle V6s into 500+hp monsters using twin-turbos, twin-intercoolers and performance exhausts based on the Los Angeles subway system. The result? You're looking at them.
