The Mercedes people must be secretly snickering in their General Foods International Coffee (Cafe Vienna, natch), considering how often they'd been jibed for quality issues while their American relations at Chrysler came off like Eisenhower after Operation Overlord. Now, it's Chrysler's turn. The company yesterday announced a voluntary recall of nearly 600,000 vehicles, due to transmission malfunction. Among those affected are Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Durango, Dodge Dakota, and Mitsubishi Raider models, equipped with six-cylinder engines and automatic transmissions — numbering 300,000 — and diesel-powered Dodge Ram pickups — 283,000 — all from model-years 2003-2005.
