Fans of Italian design who look askance at the latest from Detroit's design shops may have a glimmer of hope. Italian design firm and bespoke car builder, Stola S.p.A., recently opened a studio right in the Big Three's back yard. Based in Turin, Stola, the venerable Stola — creater of S81 Tipo show car of 2000 (pictured) — is hoping to increase its profile in the states and score new design business from US-based automakers.

According to the company, the new studio, located in the upscale Detroit suburb of Ferndale, includes self-contained design, engineering and production facilities and state-of-the-art prototype-building tools.
