Hyundai Opens First US Plant in Montgomery, Alabama

Hyundai joins the Museum of Unclaimed Baggage, the World's Largest Office Chair and Fred, the Town Dog as a resident of Alabama, having opened its first US production plant yesterday in the state's capital, Montgomery. The $1.1-billion factory is part of Hyundai's plan to localize R&D, production and sales in its largest market. Beginning in 2006, the plant will produce around 300,000 cars — Sonata sedans and the successor to the Santa Fe SUV — annually.
